Our Sod Rate — Published, Not Whispered

Every Blue Collar Q sod quote uses the same two numbers, in writing, before work starts: $1 per square foot installed, plus 50¢ per square footif we're removing and disposing of an old lawn first. A standard Florida pallet covers about 400 square feet, so the math is simple:

400 sq ft · 1 pallet
Front-yard strip or dead patch replacement
$600
replaced · $400 new-ground
2,000 sq ft · 5 pallets
Small Cape Coral front yard
$3,000
replaced · $2,000 new-ground
4,000 sq ft · 10 pallets
Standard full front + back replacement
$6,000
replaced · $4,000 new-ground
8,000 sq ft · 20 pallets
Large / corner / triple-lot property
$12,000
replaced · $8,000 new-ground

“Replaced” = removal + disposal + new sod, the way most jobs run. St. Augustine ‘Floratam’ and Bahia at the same published rate; Zoysia and premium varieties custom quoted. For repairs smaller than a pallet, it's usually cheaper to fold the work into a landscaping visit — ask when you call.

What the Rate Actually Buys

$1/sq ft — install

Grade check and soil prep — low spots filled so water can't pond
Fresh pallets delivered and laid the same day (never day-old sod)
Staggered brick-pattern install, edges cut clean to beds and hardscape
Rolled for root-to-soil contact + first-watering walkthrough

+50¢/sq ft — removal & disposal

Old turf sod-cut and stripped clean — never sod laid over a dying lawn
Haul-away and disposal fees, handled and included

Quoted separately (never snuck in)

Irrigation repairs or new zones — we're licensed irrigation contractors, quoted with your sod
Major regrading, fill dirt, or drainage work (French drains, swales)
Stump grinding or root removal under the lawn area

The removal step is the one most fly-by-night installers skip. Sod laid over old dying turf never roots properly — it looks fine for a month, then fails through the summer. That's why removal is its own line at 50¢: you see exactly what it costs, and it never gets skipped to hit a lowball number.

St. Augustine or Bahia — Same Rate, Different Lawn

St. Augustine ‘Floratam’is the SW Florida default for a reason: it thrives in our heat, tolerates the alkaline sandy soil under most Cape Coral and Fort Myers lots, and fills in dense enough to crowd out weeds. It needs working irrigation and it's the variety chinch bugs love — plan on a real pest program.

Bahia is the drought workhorse — the right call for big lots, unirrigated side yards, and properties on wells where watering restrictions bite. Coarser look, tall summer seed heads, nearly indestructible.

Zoysia ‘Empire’ and other premium varieties are custom quoted, usually same-day: fine blades, dense feel underfoot, better shade tolerance than Floratam, but slower to establish.

Sod Pricing & Installation — FAQ

How much does sod installation cost in Cape Coral and Fort Myers?

Our published rate is $1 per square foot installed for new sod, plus 50¢ per square foot to remove and dispose of the old lawn first. Most full replacements come to $1.50 per square foot all-in. One pallet covers about 400 square feet, so a pallet installed is $400 ($600 with removal) and a typical 4,000 sq ft lawn replacement is $6,000. Irrigation repairs and major grading are itemized separately on your written quote.

How many pallets of sod do I need?

Divide your lawn's square footage by 400 — that's the coverage of one standard Florida pallet. A 2,000 sq ft front yard needs 5 pallets; an 8,000 sq ft full property needs 20. Don't want to measure? Our instant quote tool measures your lawn from satellite imagery and county parcel records, and we verify the exact footage before install day.

Do I need working irrigation before new sod goes in?

For St. Augustine, yes — new sod needs water from day one, and a dead zone or broken timer will kill fresh Floratam in a week of Florida sun. That's why our quote flow asks about your irrigation up front. If yours isn't running, we're licensed irrigation contractors and will quote the repair alongside your sod so everything is ready on install day. Bahia is the exception — it establishes without irrigation.

Which sod type should I choose — St. Augustine or Bahia?

St. Augustine (usually Floratam) is the SW Florida default: dense, heat-tolerant, and happy in our alkaline sandy soil as long as it gets irrigation. Bahia is the low-water workhorse for big lots, well systems, and unirrigated areas. Both install at the published $1/sq ft rate. Zoysia and other premium varieties are custom quoted — usually same-day.

Can you install sod during the summer rainy season?

Yes — summer is actually a strong window in SW Florida because daily rain does much of the establishment watering for you. The trade-off is you must stay on top of fungus watch with all that moisture. October through May installs need a stricter 2–3×-per-day watering schedule for the first two weeks. We install year-round and program your irrigation controller for the establishment schedule before we leave.

Will new sod fix a lawn that died from chinch bugs or grubs?

Only if the infestation is dealt with first. New sod laid over an active chinch bug or grub problem dies the same way the old lawn did — usually within a season. We check for live pest activity before install, and if we find it we'll tell you to have a licensed pest control applicator treat the lawn before we schedule the install.
