Dombeya Seminole, Delivered and Planted in SW Florida

Dombeya 'Seminole' is a fast-growing flowering tree that does well in Southwest Florida and puts on its show in winter, when drooping pink pompom clusters cover the branches and bees and butterflies come to feed. It suits a specimen spot or a big back-of-the-bed screen. It wants full sun, room to spread, and a mild winter.

Where Dombeya Seminole works in a SW Florida yard

Place a Dombeya where you will see it from a window or patio in winter, when the blooms hang like pompoms and bees and butterflies work them. It reaches 8 to 20 ft, so give it 10 to 15 ft from the house, pool cage and power lines.

Big, fuzzy leaves read tropical beside palms, and lower plants like pentas and bromeliads fill in at its feet.

  • Winter-flowering specimen
  • Butterfly and bee tree
  • Big back-of-bed screen
  • Focal tree for large yards

How our crew plants it

Dig twice as wide as the root ball and no deeper, root flare at or just above grade, in a sunny, well-drained spot. Stake larger trees for the first year and mulch 3 inches wide.

Under Lee and Collier rules you can water new plantings beyond your two assigned days, so soak it often early on. Our crew handles the digging and watering in.

Care after planting

  • Prune right after flowering in spring to hold size and shape, since late pruning removes the winter flower buds.
  • Feed in spring and early October with a slow-release fertilizer, and skip nitrogen and phosphorus from June 1 to September 30 under the Lee County, Naples and Marco Island ban.
  • Cover young trees on frost nights inland, and plant where cold air does not pool.

What to watch for

  • Limbs can be brittle and the big leaves catch wind, so thin the canopy before storm season and stake young trees.
  • A hard freeze burns buds and leaves, which costs you the winter bloom.

Dombeya Seminole questions we hear

When does Dombeya Seminole bloom in Florida?+

Dombeya Seminole blooms in the cool months, typically from late fall through winter into early spring, when little else is flowering. Frost can burn the buds, so a mild winter gives the best show. Pruning right after flowering protects next winter's blooms.

How big does Dombeya Seminole get?+

Plan on 8 to 20 ft tall and nearly as wide, depending on how you prune it. It grows fast, so it fills a corner within a few seasons. Give it at least 10 to 15 ft from the house and pool cage, and prune after bloom to keep it compact.

Can Dombeya Seminole take frost and salt?+

Light cold is fine, but a hard freeze burns the leaves and buds. Coastal Lee and Collier rarely see damage, while inland yards can, so cover young trees on frost nights. Salt tolerance is low to moderate, so keep it back from direct salt spray on waterfront lots.
