Where Jackfruit works in a SW Florida yard

Jackfruit suits a larger lot with a sunny, sheltered corner, ideally on the warm south or east side of the house or near water that takes the edge off cold. Keep it clear of driveways, cars, patios and play areas, since mature fruit is heavy and cut sap is sticky. Banana and papaya make easy tropical orchard neighbors.

  • Fruit specimen tree
  • Tropical orchard corner
  • Large-lot evergreen shade

How our crew plants it

Pick a sunny spot with good drainage, 25 to 30 feet from structures, and set the root ball slightly high on a low mound so water drains away. Jackfruit dislikes root disturbance, so the root ball goes in intact and staked.

Our crew waters it in and cleans up. Lee and Collier allow extra watering on new plantings, so water often at first.

Care after planting

  • Water young trees regularly and mulch to hold moisture, but never let water stand around the roots.
  • Feed with a tropical fruit tree fertilizer that includes micronutrients several times a year, and use nothing containing nitrogen or phosphorus from June 1 to September 30.
  • Cover young trees with frost cloth on freeze nights, and wait for spring to prune out cold-damaged wood.
  • Prune after harvest to hold the height down, and wear gloves because the milky sap is sticky.

What to watch for

  • Soggy or flooded soil rots the roots quickly, so skip low spots that hold water in the rainy season.
  • Mature fruit is heavy enough to damage a car or hurt someone when it drops, so keep the tree away from walkways and parking.

Jackfruit questions we hear

Can you grow jackfruit in Cape Coral or Fort Myers?+

Yes, in a warm, protected spot. Jackfruit is a tropical tree that frost damages, so coastal sites and the south side of the house are best, and young trees need cover on freeze nights. Inland areas like Lehigh Acres are riskier. It also needs full sun, rich soil and drainage.

How long does a jackfruit tree take to fruit?+

Grafted trees can fruit in about three to four years, while trees grown from seed take much longer. Fruit forms on the trunk and main limbs. A tree set back by cold will fruit later, and steady water, feeding and a warm site speed it up.

How big does a jackfruit tree get, and how close to the house can I plant it?+

Left alone, it reaches 30 to 50 feet tall, so plant it 25 to 30 feet from the house, pool and drain fields. You can prune to hold it near 15 to 20 feet, which makes picking easier. Fruit hangs on the trunk, so keep cars and patios out from underneath.
