Where Arikury Palm works in a SW Florida yard
Use arikury palm as a small, textured accent near an entry, in a courtyard bed or in a short row along a garden path, set a few feet back from the walk. The fronds stand upright, so the crown stays narrow and fits tight spaces.
The rough, spiraled leaf bases on the trunk add a rugged look. Underplant with bromeliads, cast iron plant and coontie.
- Small-yard accent palm
- Entry and courtyard planting
- Pool-cage planters
- Under taller palms and trees
How our crew plants it
Dig the hole twice as wide as the root ball and no deeper, and set the top of the root ball level with the soil so the trunk is never buried. Brace the palm for the first year if it wobbles. Water in well, using the extra watering Lee and Collier allow for new plantings, but avoid soggy ground.
Care after planting
- Feed with a controlled-release 8-2-12 palm fertilizer that includes micronutrients, applied before June 1 and again after September 30, since Lee County, Naples and Marco Island ban nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer from June 1 to September 30.
- Watch older fronds for potassium (yellow-orange flecking or dead tips), magnesium (yellow edges with a green center) and manganese (stunted, frizzled new fronds) deficiency, and correct with palm fertilizer.
- Water regularly while it settles in, then ease off, since this palm dislikes wet feet in the rainy season.
- Leave the old leaf bases alone and cut only dead fronds, leaving a few inches of stalk; it rarely needs trimming.
What to watch for
- The leaf stems carry sharp spines, so wear heavy gloves and keep the palm away from walkways, play areas and pool decks.
- Soggy soil in the rainy season causes root rot, so skip low spots that hold water.
Arikury Palm questions we hear
How big does an arikury palm get?+
It is a small, slow palm that usually tops out at 10 to 15 feet, with a crown only about 6 to 8 feet wide because the fronds grow upright. The trunk is slender, around 5 inches thick. That size suits entries, courtyards and pool-cage planters.
Is arikury palm cold hardy in Southwest Florida?+
It is rated hardy to about 28°F, zone 9b, so most Lee and Collier winters are no problem. A hard freeze can burn the fronds, mainly in inland pockets like Lehigh Acres. Cover young palms on frost nights.
Does arikury palm have thorns?+
Yes. The leaf stems carry sharp spines, so wear heavy gloves and eye protection when working on it, and plant it back from walkways, play areas and pool decks. The spines are one of the traits that set this palm apart from other Syagrus palms.
