Where Asian Snow (Mussaenda) works in a SW Florida yard
Put Asian Snow where the white bracts can be seen: beside the front door, around the lanai or against dark foliage in a mixed tropical bed. It gives a relaxed, informal tropical look. Pick a sheltered spot, since cold hurts it. Ti plants, ixora and bromeliads share its warmth and make good partners.

How our crew plants it
Plant at the same depth as the 3 gallon pot in well-drained soil worked with a little compost, in full sun, with mulch kept off the stem. Our crew waters it in and cleans up. Lee and Collier allow extra watering on new plantings, so soak often at first. Plant it where a wall breaks the cold wind.
Care after planting
- Prune in late winter or early spring to shape it, then lightly after a bloom flush to keep it flowering.
- Feed with a balanced fertilizer plus micronutrients in spring and fall, and skip June 1 to September 30 in Lee County, Naples and Marco Island.
- Keep the soil evenly moist and mulched, because it sulks when it dries out.
- Cover it on frost nights, and leave burned branches until spring growth shows where the live wood is.
Asian Snow (Mussaenda) questions we hear
Does mussaenda come back after a freeze?+
Often it does. Leaves burn and drop near freezing, and a hard freeze can kill the top, but plants in the ground frequently resprout from the base in spring. Wait until new growth appears, then cut back dead wood. Cover it on frost nights to avoid the setback.
How much sun does Asian Snow mussaenda need?+
Full sun gives the biggest, whitest bracts and the most bloom. A little afternoon shade is fine in the hottest spots, but heavy shade means fewer bracts and a leggy plant.
When does Asian Snow mussaenda bloom in Cape Coral?+
It blooms through the warm months, starting in late spring and running through summer and fall. Flowering slows when nights cool in winter. A light prune after each flush and steady moisture keep it going.
