Where Downy Jasmine works in a SW Florida yard

Use downy jasmine as a soft, rounded hedge along a walkway or lanai, or trim it low to cover a bank. It grows fast, so plan to shear it two or three times a year to hold 3 to 4 ft; left alone it sprawls and climbs.

Plumbago, dwarf ixora and liriope make easy partners. Keep it 3 ft off walls so you can reach the back for trimming.

  • Low flowering hedge
  • Bank or slope cover
  • Walkway border
  • Fence or wall cascade

How our crew plants it

Space plants 3 to 4 ft apart for a hedge, each in a hole twice as wide as the pot with the top of the root ball at grade. It roots in quickly in sun or part shade, but new plants still need frequent watering for a few weeks, which Lee and Collier allow beyond your assigned days.

Our crew plants it and cleans up.

Care after planting

  • Shear after each flush of bloom to keep it dense, and save any hard cutback for late March or April rather than winter.
  • Water at the roots rather than overhead, since the foliage does not like frequent wetting.
  • Feed lightly in spring and early October, and skip nitrogen and phosphorus from June 1 to September 30 under the Lee County, Naples and Marco Island ban.

What to watch for

  • Downy jasmine is not on Florida's invasive plant list and UF/IFAS does not consider it a problem species, unlike Brazilian jasmine and Gold Coast jasmine, which are listed, so make sure the tag reads Jasminum multiflorum.
  • Frost burns the leaves and a hard freeze can cut it to the ground, though it regrows.

Downy Jasmine questions we hear

Is downy jasmine fragrant?+

Lightly. The white star flowers have a soft jasmine scent that is strongest in the evening, but it is not as strong as Arabian or confederate jasmine. It blooms on and off through much of the year, so plant it near a patio or walkway where you will notice it.

Is downy jasmine invasive in Florida?+

No. UF/IFAS rates downy jasmine as not considered a problem species, and it is not on the state invasive list. Brazilian jasmine and Gold Coast jasmine are different plants that are listed as invasive, so do not mix them up. Trim it to keep it from running over nearby beds.

Will downy jasmine survive a Florida freeze?+

It is hardy in zone 9B and warmer. A light frost burns the leaves and a hard freeze can cut it back, but established plants usually resprout from the base in spring. Coastal Lee and Collier rarely see damage, while inland yards can get a frost some winters.
