Jaboticaba Trees, Delivered and Planted in SW Florida

Jaboticaba is a slow-growing Brazilian fruit tree whose grape-like purple fruit grows right on the trunk. It can grow in Southwest Florida, but it wants acidic soil, steady moisture and no salt, so it suits inland and sheltered yards better than the waterfront. The fruit takes years to start, so plan on patience. We deliver and plant it.

Where Jaboticaba works in a SW Florida yard

Plant jaboticaba where you can see and reach the trunk, such as beside a patio or along a walkway, in full sun to light shade with mulch or a low groundcover at the base. Keep it off the first row of a salty canal or bay lot, and away from light concrete, since the dark berries stain.

Lychee and Persian lime make good neighbors in a fruit corner.

  • Edible specimen tree
  • Patio or walkway focal tree
  • Large container fruit tree
  • Backyard fruit gardens

How our crew plants it

Dig the hole 2 to 3 times as wide as the pot and no deeper, with the root ball level with the soil. Cape Coral and Naples soils run alkaline, so plan on acid-forming fertilizer and pine bark mulch.

Water in well, using the extra watering allowed for new plantings in Lee and Collier. It can take up to two years to settle in.

Care after planting

  • Keep the soil evenly moist and pay extra attention to watering in the November to May dry season, since jaboticaba has no drought tolerance.
  • Feed in spring and again after September 30 with an acid-forming fertilizer that includes iron and manganese, working around the June 1 to September 30 nitrogen and phosphorus ban in Lee County, Naples and Marco Island.
  • Treat yellow new leaves with chelated iron, which is the usual fix in alkaline soil.
  • Pick the fruit within a few days of it turning purple-black and eat or chill it quickly, since it spoils in about two days at room temperature.
  • Cover young trees on frost nights.

What to watch for

  • Alkaline soil causes iron chlorosis, and salty well, canal or reclaimed irrigation water can burn the leaves, so check your water source before planting.
  • The berries stain pavers, patios and cars, so keep the tree off the pool deck and driveway edge.
  • Aphids, scale, nematodes and spider mites show up occasionally but rarely cause serious harm.

Jaboticaba questions we hear

How long does jaboticaba take to fruit in Florida?+

It is slow. UF/IFAS says a tree can take up to eight years to fruit, and trees grown from cuttings or grafts often start a few years sooner. The main harvest runs late March and April, with lighter crops through the year. Fruit spoils in about two days, so chill or freeze it.

Can jaboticaba grow in Cape Coral or Naples soil?+

It can, with help. Jaboticaba wants acidic soil and shows yellow, iron-starved leaves in SW Florida's alkaline ground, so plan on an acid-forming fertilizer, chelated iron and heavy mulch, or grow it in a large container. It also cannot take salt, so skip waterfront spots.
