Longan Trees, Delivered and Planted in Southwest Florida

Longan is a lychee relative that fruits in summer, bearing clusters of small, sweet, translucent fruit. It grows in Southwest Florida in full sun and well-drained soil, but young trees are frost-tender and it does not tolerate salt. Keep it pruned to 10 to 15 ft for easy picking and storm safety. Our 25 gallon trees are delivered and planted.

Where Longan Tree works in a SW Florida yard

Longan makes a dense, rounded evergreen tree, so it suits a back lawn or an orchard corner with full sun and room, at least 20 to 25 ft from other trees and structures if you let it grow. Pruning to 10 to 15 ft keeps fruit within reach and the canopy easier to handle in storms.

Plant it with other fruit trees such as Lychee, Mango and Jaboticaba, which want the same sun and drainage.

  • Backyard fruit tree
  • Edible landscape planting
  • Summer fruit harvest
  • Orchard corner tree

How our crew plants it

Choose a sunny, well-drained spot that does not stay wet after summer storms, set back from salt spray. Dig twice as wide as the root ball and no deeper, with the top of the ball level with the soil.

Mulch away from the trunk and water in well. Lee and Collier allow extra watering on new plantings, so water often while it roots in.

Care after planting

  • Water young trees regularly, then ease off in early fall, since a mild dry stretch in September and October helps set flowers.
  • Keep water steady through bloom, fruit set and harvest, but avoid overwatering, which causes root rot.
  • Feed with a fruit tree fertilizer with micronutrients in spring and fall, not during the June 1 to September 30 nitrogen and phosphorus ban.
  • Prune after harvest to hold the tree at 10 to 15 ft, since shorter trees stand up to storms better.

What to watch for

  • Lychee webworm and scale insects feed on new growth, so check each flush and treat early.
  • Young trees can be damaged near 29 to 31°F and killed near 26 to 28°F, so cover them on frost nights inland.

Longan Tree questions we hear

When do longan trees fruit in Florida?+

Longans bloom from about February or March through April, and the fruit ripens in June, July or August, usually 140 to 190 days after flowering. A newly planted tree can take a few years to fruit. A mild dry spell in fall and early winter helps flowering.

How big does a longan tree get, and can I keep it small?+

Left alone it reaches 30 to 40 ft tall and wide. UF/IFAS recommends keeping home trees at 10 to 15 ft with regular pruning, which also helps them survive hurricane winds. Prune after harvest, and start while the tree is young so it stays manageable.

Is longan salt tolerant or cold hardy?+

Neither, really. It does not tolerate salty soil or spray, so keep it off beachfront and canal-edge lots. Young trees can be damaged around 29 to 31°F and killed near 26 to 28°F, so protect them inland on frost nights. Coastal Lee and Collier usually stay warm enough.
