Mahogany Trees, Delivered and Planted in SW Florida

Mahogany is a South Florida native shade tree with a rounded canopy and glossy compound leaves, and it does well in SW Florida sun and sandy soil. It is one of the more wind-resistant large trees, but it is frost-tender and drops its leaves briefly in late winter. We deliver and plant mahogany by quote, sized to your site.

Where Mahogany Tree works in a SW Florida yard

Mahogany is a big shade tree with a high, rounded canopy, so plant it where it has room: at least 25 feet from the house and well away from pool cages, power lines and sidewalks. It works as a single lawn tree, along a long drive, or as a pair at the front of a property.

Sabal palms, coontie and wild coffee make good native companions underneath and beside it.

  • Large shade tree
  • Wind-tough native tree
  • Lawn and driveway tree
  • Large-lot canopy

How our crew plants it

Dig the hole two to three times as wide as the root ball and no deeper, and set the root flare at or just above grade. Backfill with native soil, water in deeply and mulch 3 inches deep, off the trunk.

Stake only on windy sites. Lee and Collier allow extra watering for new plantings, so water deeply every day or two at first.

Care after planting

  • Water deeply once a week through the first dry season, since shallow daily sprinkling keeps roots near the surface.
  • Prune young trees for one strong leader and well-spaced branches, and leave large limb work to a certified arborist.
  • Don't worry when it sheds leaves in late winter; new ones flush in spring.
  • Cover or protect young trees on frost nights, especially inland.
  • Keep mulch 3 inches deep and off the trunk, and keep trimmers away from the bark.

What to watch for

  • Webworms and other leaf-chewing caterpillars can mar new spring growth, which looks rough but rarely harms a healthy tree.
  • Woody seed pods split open and drop in spring, so plan on some cleanup under the canopy.

Mahogany Tree questions we hear

Are mahogany trees good in hurricanes?+

Mahogany is known for strong wind resistance and often survives major hurricanes. Any large tree can still lose limbs in a storm, so prune young trees for good structure, keep the canopy open and plant well away from the house.

How big does a mahogany tree get, and how far from the house should it go?+

Plan on 40 to 60 feet tall and 30 to 50 feet wide. Plant it at least 25 feet from the house and farther from pool cages, power lines and sidewalks, since the roots and canopy both spread wide.

How much does it cost to have a mahogany tree planted?+

Mahogany is a quote item, so price depends on the tree's size, how many you want and the site. Text us a photo of the spot and the size you have in mind, and we text back a planted price, usually within the hour during the day. Half down holds the tree and a delivery day.
