Where Majesty Palm works in a SW Florida yard

Put a majesty palm where you can water and feed it easily: a courtyard, a pool corner or a bed on its own irrigation zone. The arching, spine-free fronds are friendly to pool decks and walkways. Three palms at different heights fill a corner better than one, and a single palm works as a focal point by an entry.

Ti plants, bromeliads and Boston fern like the same moist, filtered conditions underneath.

  • Pool and patio accent
  • Courtyard focal palm
  • Moist, irrigated beds
  • Large container palm

How our crew plants it

The existing soil is the backfill, the root ball sits level with the surface, and no mulch touches the trunk. Majesty palm wants moisture, so a shallow watering ring helps hold water over the roots, and a 7 or 15 gallon palm needs no bracing unless the site is windy.

Our crew sets the depth, waters it in and cleans up. New plantings get extra watering under Lee and Collier rules, so keep the root zone moist for the first couple of months, then stay on schedule.

Care after planting

  • Keep the root zone evenly moist with a 2 to 3 inch mulch ring pulled back from the trunk, and soak deeply on your assigned watering days.
  • Feed in spring and fall with a controlled-release palm fertilizer, about 8-2-12 with magnesium and micronutrients, and schedule around the Lee County, Naples and Marco Island ban on nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer, June 1 to September 30.
  • Treat yellow, streaked or frizzled new fronds as a nutrient shortage, since potassium, magnesium, manganese and iron run short in our sandy soils, and correct it with a micronutrient palm fertilizer rather than extra water.
  • Trim only fronds that have turned fully brown, because cutting green fronds starves the palm.
  • Cover young palms with frost cloth on freezing nights, especially inland.

What to watch for

  • Majesty palm comes from river banks in Madagascar, so a dry spell or a hungry root zone shows up fast as brown tips, yellow fronds and a thin crown.
  • UF/IFAS lists weevils as a possible problem on majesty palm, so a crown that wilts or collapses should be looked at right away.

Majesty Palm questions we hear

Does majesty palm do well in Southwest Florida?+

It can, with conditions. Majesty palm looks great at a pool or patio, but it needs steady moisture, regular feeding and frost protection. If you want a palm that shrugs off dry spells and neglect, a native sabal or a Florida thatch palm is the lower-maintenance choice.

How big does a majesty palm get?+

Plan on 10 to 15 ft for the first several years, then slow growth toward 25 to 30 ft with a spread around 10 ft over the long run. UF/IFAS describes it as staying short for a long time, so it fits patios and pool corners for years.

Why are my majesty palm fronds turning yellow or brown?+

Usually water or nutrition. Dry roots brown the tips, while nitrogen, potassium, magnesium or manganese shortages yellow or streak the fronds. Soak the root zone deeply, fertilize with a controlled-release palm formula with micronutrients, and trim only fully brown fronds.

Can a majesty palm survive a Florida freeze?+

Not reliably. Fronds start to burn around 30 to 32°F, and a hard freeze can kill the palm. Coastal Lee and Collier are usually fine, but inland spots like Lehigh Acres need cover on frost nights, especially for young palms.

How much does it cost to plant a majesty palm?+

Pot size and the number of palms set the planted price. Text your address and the look you want, and we text the price back, usually within the hour during the day. Half down holds the palms and a delivery day.
