Mona Lavender, Delivered and Planted in Southwest Florida

Mona Lavender is a compact plectranthus with glossy leaves and purple flower spikes, and it is one of the better bloomers for part shade in Southwest Florida. It flowers heaviest from late summer through spring, filling the fall and winter color gap. It is not a true lavender, and hard frost burns it. Plants come in 3 gallon, delivered and planted.

Where Mona Lavender works in a SW Florida yard

Use Mona Lavender where other flowering plants sulk: the east side of the house, under a tree with filtered light, or along a shaded walk. Plant it in drifts of three to five, 18 to 24 in. apart, for a purple carpet in fall and winter.

The purple undersides of the leaves keep it interesting when it is not in bloom. Good partners are Purple Firespike, Shrimp Plant and Cast Iron Plant.

  • Shade bed color
  • Under trees and eaves
  • Borders and edging
  • Containers and baskets

How our crew plants it

Mix a little compost into sandy backfill, because this plant likes richer soil and steady moisture. Plant level with the soil in a hole twice as wide as the pot, 18 to 24 in.

apart. Water in well and mulch lightly. Lee and Collier allow extra watering on new plantings, and Mona Lavender wilts quickly if it dries out in its first weeks.

Care after planting

  • Pinch the tips of young plants and remove spent flower spikes to keep it bushy and flowering.
  • Keep the soil evenly moist, since it wilts quickly in dry spells.
  • Cut leggy stems back by about a third in spring after the last frost.
  • Feed in spring and early fall, and use nothing with nitrogen or phosphorus from June 1 to September 30.
  • Cover plants on frost nights, or tuck them under a tree or eave for protection.

What to watch for

  • Leaves scorch and bleach in hot afternoon sun, so site it with afternoon shade.
  • Deep shade makes the plant leggy, so give it filtered light or a little morning sun.

Mona Lavender questions we hear

Is Mona Lavender actually lavender?+

No. Mona Lavender is a plectranthus hybrid named for its lavender-purple flowers. True lavender struggles in Florida's humidity, but Mona Lavender is built for it. The leaves are dark green on top and purple underneath, and it prefers part shade.

When does Mona Lavender bloom in Florida?+

From late summer through spring, with the heaviest show in fall and winter. Short days trigger flowering, so summer bloom is lighter. Remove spent spikes and pinch growth tips to keep the plant full and blooming.

Does Mona Lavender survive frost in Cape Coral?+

It is hardy in zone 10a, but frost browns the tops. A light frost may nip it back and a hard freeze can kill the top growth, though plants often resprout from the base once it warms. Cover it on frost nights or plant it under a tree or eave for protection.
