Where Spider Plant works in a SW Florida yard
Use spider plant as a soft, arching edge along a shaded walk, under oaks and palms or around the base of a tree, where it fills in quickly. It also works in patio pots, hanging baskets and shaded corners near entries.
Pair it with cast iron plant, boston fern and ti plant for a layered, low-light tropical bed. Keep it out of hot, all-day sun.
- Shade border plant
- Groundcover under trees
- Container and patio pots
- Hanging basket filler
How our crew plants it
Spider plant wants shade and moisture, so we loosen the soil and blend in a little compost before planting. Each 3 gallon plant goes in at the depth it grew in the pot, spaced 12 to 18 in apart for a border, then gets watered in well and mulched lightly. Lee and Collier allow extra watering on new plantings.
Care after planting
- Water often enough to keep the soil evenly moist, since dry spells brown the leaf tips.
- Brown leaf tips usually trace back to dry soil, too much sun, or salts in the water or fertilizer, and trimming them off with scissors keeps the plant tidy.
- Feed lightly in spring and fall with a slow-release fertilizer, skipping June 1 to September 30 in Lee County, Naples and Marco Island.
- Protect plants on frost nights, and if frost burns the leaves, cut the damaged foliage back and it regrows.
- Divide crowded clumps in spring, and pot up the plantlets to make new plants.
What to watch for
- Soggy, poorly drained soil can cause root rot, and snails and slugs may chew leaves in the rainy season.
Spider Plant questions we hear
Can spider plant grow outside in Florida?+
Yes, in part shade to shade. Spider plant works outdoors in Southwest Florida beds and pots, where it fills in as a border or groundcover. Hot afternoon sun scorches the leaves and frost burns them, so keep it protected and give it steady moisture.
Is spider plant safe for cats and dogs?+
Spider plant is listed as non-toxic to cats and dogs by the ASPCA. Cats are often drawn to the arching leaves and may nibble them, which can cause a mild stomach upset in some pets. If your pet eats a lot and seems unwell, call your vet.
Why are the tips of my spider plant turning brown?+
Brown tips usually come from dry soil, too much hot sun, or salts and fluoride in the water or fertilizer. Move the plant into more shade, keep the soil evenly moist, feed lightly, and trim the brown tips with scissors. Cold nights can also burn the leaf ends.
