Where Abiu Fruit Tree works in a SW Florida yard
Abiu is a fruit tree first and an ornamental second, with glossy evergreen leaves and a pyramidal shape. Put it in full sun in the warmest part of the yard, such as the south side of the house, and keep it out of low spots where cold air settles.
Give it at least 20 to 25 feet from buildings and other trees. It fits in a mixed planting with mamey sapote, longan and carambola.
- Backyard tropical fruit
- Rare fruit collections
- Warm, sheltered corners
How our crew plants it
Dig the hole three to four times as wide as the root ball and no deeper, setting it level with or slightly above the soil, or on a mound where water stands. We water in and mulch 2 to 3 inches deep, off the trunk.
Lee and Collier allow extra watering for new plantings, so water every day or two at first, then taper.
Care after planting
- Water new trees every few days through the first dry season, then weekly during dry spells, especially while fruit is setting.
- Feed in the growing season with a fruit-tree fertilizer with micronutrients, and skip nitrogen and phosphorus products from June 1 to September 30 where local rules ban them.
- Prune after harvest to keep the tree at a comfortable picking height of about 10 to 15 feet.
- Pick fruit when the skin is fully yellow, since unripe fruit is full of sticky latex.
- Cover young trees on frost nights.
What to watch for
- Cold is the main risk: young trees can be killed below 32°F and mature trees are damaged around 29 to 31°F, so plan frost protection.
- Caribbean fruit flies attack overripe fruit, so pick promptly and clear fallen fruit.
- Alkaline soil can cause iron deficiency, shown by yellow new leaves, which a chelated iron product corrects.
Abiu Fruit Tree questions we hear
What does abiu fruit taste like?+
Abiu is sweet and creamy, with a caramel-custard flavor and translucent, jelly-like white pulp inside a smooth yellow skin. Eat it fully ripe, when the skin is bright yellow and slightly soft. Unripe abiu is full of sticky latex that coats the mouth.
Can you grow abiu in Cape Coral and Fort Myers?+
Yes, in a warm, sheltered spot, but cold winters are a risk. Abiu is sensitive to cool and cold weather, so coastal Lee and Collier fit best, and inland yards need frost protection on cold nights. Plant it near the south wall of the house and cover young trees when a freeze is forecast.
How big does an abiu tree get, and when does it fruit?+
Left alone it can reach 30 feet or more in Florida, and most home growers prune it to 10 to 15 feet. Grafted trees can start fruiting within a few years of planting, and the fruit typically ripens in fall. Give it at least 20 to 25 feet of space.
