Agapanthus Blue, Delivered and Planted in SW Florida
Blue globes of flowers on tall stalks make agapanthus, or lily of the Nile, a classic border plant, and it does fine in Southwest Florida beds that drain well and get morning sun with some afternoon shade. The clumps bloom in late spring and summer and suit neat borders and mass plantings. They can sulk in soggy beds during the rainy season.

- Full sun to part shade; morning sun and some afternoon shade is best in SW Florida
- Water:

Where Agapanthus Blue works in a SW Florida yard
Agapanthus works as a clean edge along a walkway, in front of taller foundation shrubs or in a block of one color near an entry. Plant it with plumbago for a blue-on-blue effect, or add liriope and society garlic for a tidy, low-maintenance bed. Give it the brightest morning light you have, with some afternoon shade.
- Blue-flowering border plant
- Formal entry beds
- Mass plantings
- Patio containers
How our crew plants it
Keep the crown at soil level, since burying it invites rot and weak flowering. We set the 3 gallon plant in a hole twice as wide as the pot, on a slight mound if water stands after rain, space plants 18 to 24 in apart, water in, and mulch lightly off the crown.
Lee and Collier allow extra watering on new plantings.
Care after planting
- Cut flower stalks to the base after the blooms fade to keep the clump tidy.
- Divide only when clumps get crowded and flowering drops, since agapanthus bloom best when snug.
- Feed in early spring and again in fall with a slow-release fertilizer, and skip June 1 to September 30 in Lee County, Naples and Marco Island.
- Water during long dry spells, but avoid keeping the bed constantly wet in the rainy season.
What to watch for
- Root and crown rot can set in when the bed stays wet through the rainy season, so drainage matters more than extra water.
Agapanthus Blue questions we hear
Does agapanthus grow well in Southwest Florida?+
It does, with the right spot. Agapanthus likes well-drained soil, morning sun and some afternoon shade, which makes sandy, well-drained beds a good fit. It struggles in soggy ground and in deep shade, where it makes leaves but few flowers.
When does agapanthus bloom in Florida?+
Agapanthus blooms from late spring into summer, with tall stalks topped by blue flower globes. Flowering is best in bright light and on clumps that are slightly crowded. Cut spent stalks to the base after the flowers fade to keep the planting tidy.
How far apart should I plant agapanthus?+
Plant agapanthus 18 to 24 in apart, center to center, for a border or mass planting that fills in over a couple of seasons. Use the wider spacing for larger clumps. Keep the crown at soil level, since burying it invites rot.
