Blue Daze Groundcover, Delivered and Planted in Cape Coral
Blue daze is a low, spreading groundcover with true blue flowers, and it does very well in SW Florida sun. It stays under a foot tall, blooms through the warm months and needs little water once rooted. It works best along walkways, bed edges and walls, where it can spill over. We deliver and plant it in 1 gallon plants at a spacing that fills the bed.
- Light:
- Full sun to part sun; blooms best in full sun
- Water:
- Low to moderate; drought tolerant once established, dislikes soggy soil
- Salt:
- Moderate; handles light salt spray

Where Blue Daze works in a SW Florida yard
Blue daze works as a fine-textured edge in front of taller shrubs, along a drive or walk, or tumbling over a low wall. The flowers are a clear sky blue, so they pair well with yellow and orange: try bulbine, pentas or dwarf ixora behind it.
It also fills a sunny bed as a groundcover where you want color without turf. Don't put it where people walk across it, since it won't take foot traffic.
- Walkway and bed edging
- Spilling over low walls
- Sunny groundcover mass
- Containers and planters
How our crew plants it
Loosen the bed, dig each hole as wide as the pot and no deeper, and set the plant level with the surrounding soil. We space 1 gallon plants 18 to 24 inches apart, water in well and mulch lightly, keeping mulch off the stems.
Lee and Collier allow extra watering for new plantings, so water every day or two for the first few weeks while the roots take hold, then taper to your assigned days.
Care after planting
- Shear it back by a third after a heavy bloom flush or when it gets leggy, and it fills back in within weeks.
- Once established it gets by on your assigned watering days or less, and daily sprinkler soaking in summer only invites rot.
- Feed lightly in spring if at all, since too much fertilizer makes it leggy and soft.
- Cut back frost-burned tops once the cold danger has passed, and it will resprout from the base.
What to watch for
- Soggy beds and constant overhead watering cause stem rot and thin, bare patches, especially in the rainy season.
- In shade it turns leggy and flowers poorly, so it only earns its keep in full sun.
Blue Daze questions we hear
How fast does blue daze spread?+
Moderately fast in warm weather. A 1 gallon plant spreads to roughly 2 to 3 feet across over a season or two, and plants set 18 to 24 inches apart close the gaps in a few months. Growth slows in winter, then picks back up in spring.
Does blue daze bloom all year in Florida?+
It blooms through the warm months and off and on in winter, slowing in cool weeks. Each flower opens in the morning and closes later in the day, and the blooms stay shut on dark, rainy days, so the bed looks bluest on sunny mornings.
Will blue daze come back after a frost?+
Usually. Frost burns the tops, but the plant normally resprouts from the base when the weather warms. Wait until frost danger has passed, then cut back the damaged growth. A hard freeze can kill plants in low or exposed spots, so inland beds may need patching now and then.
How far apart should I plant blue daze?+
Space 1 gallon plants 18 to 24 inches apart for a mass planting. Closer, around 15 inches, fills in faster but takes more plants. Farther than 24 inches leaves gaps for weeds through the first year.
Can blue daze take full sun and salt spray?+
Yes to full sun, which gives the most flowers. It handles light salt spray and sandy soil, but not salt water flooding or beds that stay wet. On exposed waterfront, plant it behind the first row of tougher shrubs.
How much does it cost to have blue daze planted?+
Price depends on how many plants the bed needs and the site. Text us the length and width of the bed, and we text back a planted price, usually within the hour during the day. Half down holds the plants and a delivery day.
