Beach Sunflower, Delivered and Planted in SW Florida

Beach sunflower is a low, sprawling Florida native groundcover that blooms yellow most of the year and does well in SW Florida's hot, sandy, salt-sprayed spots, so it suits coastal and canal lots. It handles drought, too. We deliver and plant 1 gallon plants, set 2 to 3 feet apart so they fill in.

Where Beach Sunflower works in a SW Florida yard

Beach sunflower works as a flowering groundcover on sunny slopes, along driveways and seawalls, and in dune-style beds where it can sprawl. It spreads wide and low, so give it room or edge it. Bees and butterflies visit it constantly. Muhly grass, firebush and sea grape make natural coastal partners.

  • Sunny groundcover
  • Coastal and dune-style beds
  • Pollinator plantings
  • Hot sandy strips

How our crew plants it

Plant 2 to 3 feet apart in full sun, in lean, well-drained sand at the same depth as the pot. Skip rich soil and thick mulch. Our crew waters it in and cleans up. Lee and Collier allow extra watering on new plantings, and beach sunflower roots in within a few weeks, after which rain and light irrigation are enough.

Care after planting

  • Cut it back by about a third once or twice a year to keep it dense, since stems get leggy and flop after summer rains.
  • Skip fertilizer and rich soil, which only make it floppy.
  • Deadhead or pull volunteer seedlings where you do not want it, because it self-seeds freely.
  • Water until it is established, then let rain handle it.

What to watch for

  • It self-seeds aggressively and can wander into lawns and neighboring beds, so deadhead or edge it if you want it contained.

Beach Sunflower questions we hear

Is beach sunflower native to Florida?+

Yes. Beach sunflower (Helianthus debilis) is a native of Florida's coastal dunes and sandy scrub, which is why it handles heat, drought and salt spray so well. It is a good pollinator plant, and birds eat the seed.

How far apart should I plant beach sunflower?+

Plant 2 to 3 feet apart for a quick fill, since each plant can spread 3 to 6 feet across over time. Wider spacing works if you are patient. Give it full sun and lean sandy soil, and thin or edge it if it spreads past its bed.

Does beach sunflower bloom all year in Southwest Florida?+

It blooms most of the year, with the heaviest flowering in the warm months and a lighter show in winter. Full sun and lean soil keep the flowers coming, while rich soil and too much water make it leggy. A trim every few months resets it.
