Allamanda, Delivered and Planted in SW Florida
Golden trumpet flowers most of the year make allamanda a popular Southwest Florida plant, as a 3 to 6 ft bush or a vine that climbs 10 to 20 ft. UF/IFAS rates it a high invasion risk, so we plant it contained and away from natural areas. We deliver and plant both forms in 3 gallon.

Where Allamanda works in a SW Florida yard
The bush form makes a bright low hedge or bed shrub in full sun, and the vine form covers a trellis, fence or arbor with golden trumpets. Pair it with purple plumbago for a classic yellow and purple contrast, or with ixora behind it. Plant it where you can keep it pruned, well back from preserves, canal banks and shorelines.
- Golden flowering hedge
- Trellis or fence vine
- Mailbox and arbor color
- Large container plant
How our crew plants it
Give a vine a trellis or fence to climb before it goes in. Each hole is twice as wide as the pot and no deeper, with the root ball level with the soil, and our crew backfills with native sand, waters it in and tidies up.
Mulch 2 inches, off the stems. New plants need extra water, which Lee and Collier allow for new plantings.
Care after planting
- Prune hard in late winter or early spring, once the cold danger has passed, to keep the bush dense and the vine in bounds, since it flowers on new growth.
- Light feeding in spring and early fall is plenty; skip nitrogen and phosphorus June 1 to September 30 to stay inside the Lee County, Naples and Marco Island ban.
- Wear gloves when pruning, because the milky sap irritates skin.
- Cover young plants on frost nights if you are inland.
What to watch for
- UF/IFAS rates allamanda a high invasion risk in Florida and does not recommend it, so we plant it contained and well back from preserves and shorelines, and for native color we suggest firebush or beach sunflower.
- All parts are toxic if eaten and the milky sap can irritate skin, so keep it away from pets and kids who chew plants.
Allamanda questions we hear
Is allamanda invasive in Florida?+
UF/IFAS gives allamanda a high invasion risk rating and does not recommend planting it. In a managed yard it behaves as a vigorous shrub or vine you prune. Keep it away from preserves and shorelines, and consider firebush or beach sunflower if you want a native alternative.
Is allamanda poisonous to dogs and cats?+
Yes. All parts are toxic if eaten, and the milky sap can irritate skin and mouths. Keep it out of reach of pets and children who chew plants, and wear gloves when you prune.
What is the difference between bush allamanda and vine allamanda?+
The bush form stays around 3 to 6 ft and works as a hedge or bed shrub. The vine form climbs 10 to 20 ft on a trellis, fence or arbor. Both bloom golden yellow in full sun, and both come in 3 gallon.
