Aztec Grass, Delivered and Planted in SW Florida
Aztec grass is a clumping, white-and-green striped grass-like plant that does well in SW Florida in part shade and stays bright all year, which makes it a sharp edging for beds and walks. It stays 6 to 18 inches tall and needs modest water once rooted. Our 1 gallon plants come from our own nursery, and our crew delivers and plants them.
- Light:
- Part shade to full sun; afternoon shade keeps leaf tips from scorching in summer
- Water:
- Low to moderate; drought tolerant once established, steady moisture while rooting
- Salt:
- Low to moderate; keep out of direct salt spray

Where Aztec Grass works in a SW Florida yard
Aztec grass makes a crisp edge along walks, beds and tree rings, and a groundcover under palms and shrubs where the light is filtered. The white stripes lift shady spots and stand out against dark mulch and green shrubs.
Set plants in a straight line for a formal border, or in drifts for a softer look. Bromeliads, ti plants and cast iron plant make good partners.
- Border and edging
- Shady bed groundcover
- Walkway and path liner
- Contrast under dark foliage
How our crew plants it
Loosen the roots, then set each 1 gallon plant level with the soil, 10 to 12 inches apart for a solid border. Mulch goes between plants, off the crowns. Our crew soaks it in and cleans up. New plants need frequent watering for the first couple of months, as Lee and Collier allow, then your two assigned days.
Care after planting
- Water on your assigned days; established clumps handle dry spells, though leaf tips brown in long drought or hot afternoon sun.
- Trim ragged or sun-scorched leaves to the base in late winter, and fresh growth fills in by spring.
- A light feeding of slow-release fertilizer in spring and again in fall is plenty, and nothing containing nitrogen or phosphorus goes on from June 1 to September 30.
What to watch for
- Brown leaf spots can show up in the rainy season in crowded or overhead-watered beds, so trim off affected blades and water at the base.
Aztec Grass questions we hear
Can Aztec grass take full sun in Florida?+
It tolerates sun, but SW Florida's afternoon heat scorches the leaf tips and fades the white stripes. Morning sun with afternoon shade, or filtered light, gives the cleanest color. In full sun, plan on steady water and trimming off scorched blades in late winter.
How far apart should I plant Aztec grass?+
Set 1 gallon plants 10 to 12 inches apart for a solid border that fills in within a season or two. Go 15 to 18 inches apart for a looser edge that fills in more slowly.
Is Aztec grass the same as liriope?+
It is a close relative, and it is commonly sold as variegated liriope. Like liriope, it forms an evergreen clump and gets trimmed back each late winter. Aztec grass is known for crisp white-and-green striping, which gives more contrast than plain green liriope.
