Flax Lily, Delivered and Planted in SW Florida
Flax lily is a low, grassy clump that takes sun, salt and dry spells in Southwest Florida yards, and it earns its keep as an edging or a mass planting under palms and trees. Strappy leaves stay 18 to 30 in tall. Small blue-violet flowers in spring and summer give way to purple berries. We deliver it, plant it and clean up.

Where Flax Lily works in a SW Florida yard
Use flax lily where you want a clean, low edge that stays neat without constant trimming. It lines walkways, wraps pool-deck beds, and makes a skirt under palms and small trees. Plant in groups of three or five, 18 to 24 in apart, so the clumps knit into a ribbon of foliage.
Bulbine, coontie and dwarf ixora play well beside it. In hot, reflected sun from a wall or driveway, give it a little afternoon shade so the tips do not scorch.
- Bed borders and edging
- Mass planting under palms
- Low walkway edge
- Pool-deck bed filler
How our crew plants it
Start with a hole as deep as the pot and twice as wide. Set the crown, where the leaves meet the roots, level with or a touch above the soil so water drains away from it. Backfill with native soil and mulch 2 inches deep, off the crown. Water in well and keep the root ball moist daily at first, easing back to your assigned days over a few weeks.
Lee and Collier let new plantings take extra water beyond the usual two days. Our crew plants it, waters it in, and cleans up.
Care after planting
- Pull or cut brown leaves at the base in late winter, and trim a ragged clump back then so new growth fills in.
- Water deeply through the first dry season, then let rainfall and your two assigned days carry it.
- One light feeding in spring is plenty, and Lee County, Naples and Marco Island ban nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer from June 1 to September 30.
- Divide crowded clumps in spring or early summer and replant the pieces to fill more bed.
What to watch for
- Birds spread the berries, and UF/IFAS rates one flax lily species sold in Florida, Dianella ensifolia, as invasive, so keep plantings in managed beds and choose a native like coontie near preserves and waterways.
- It handles drought but sulks in standing water, so avoid low spots that stay wet through the rainy season.
Flax Lily questions we hear
Can flax lily take full sun in Southwest Florida?+
Yes, flax lily takes full sun here once it is established, but the leaves stay greener and fuller with some afternoon shade. In reflected heat from a wall or driveway the tips can scorch in summer. Water it regularly for the first few months while the roots settle in.
How far apart should I plant flax lily?+
Plant flax lily 18 to 24 in apart, center to center, for a border or mass. Closer spacing fills in sooner but crowds the clumps over time. Three-gallon plants fill gaps faster, while one-gallon plants take a season or two to knit together.
Does flax lily tolerate salt and drought?+
It has moderate salt tolerance and handles dry spells once established, which suits Cape Coral and Fort Myers yards. Keep it off the open-water edge of a canal lot, where heavy salt spray burns leaf tips. Give it regular water for the first few months while roots grow.
How big does flax lily get, and does it flower?+
Expect clumps 18 to 30 in tall and 2 to 3 ft wide. Small blue-violet flowers rise on thin stalks in spring and summer, followed by purple berries. Growth is moderate, so the clump widens slowly, and it rarely needs cutting back more than once a year.
Can I plant flax lily under palms and oak trees?+
Yes. Flax lily handles part shade and dry root zones better than most flowering plants, so it makes a good skirt under palms and oaks. Plant at the drip line rather than against the trunk, and water it regularly until it is established because tree roots compete for moisture.
How much does flax lily cost to have planted?+
Price depends on size, form and how many, so we text a planted price. Flax lily comes in one-gallon and three-gallon sizes, and a bigger bed simply means more plants to quote. We usually reply within the hour during the day, and half down holds the plants and a delivery day.
