Where Bamboo Asian Lemon works in a SW Florida yard

Asian Lemon is the one to pick when you want color in a bamboo. The yellow culms with green stripes stand out against dark foliage, so use it as a feature near a patio or a screen along a back fence.

It forms a tight, upright clump, not a spreading thicket. Cast iron plant, ti plant or ornamental ginger suit the base, and leave 4 to 5 ft from any wall or fence.

  • Colorful privacy screen
  • Specimen feature plant
  • Tall backdrop for tropical beds

How our crew plants it

Start with a hole twice as wide as the container and no deeper, so the top of the root ball sits level with the soil. Backfill with native soil and mulch 3 inches deep. Field-grown specimens are braced until they root in.

The crew handles the setting and watering in, then cleans up. Extra watering for new plantings is allowed under Lee and Collier rules.

Care after planting

  • Water deeply while it establishes and through the dry months of April and May, then follow your assigned two days.
  • Fertilize in spring and early fall with a balanced product that includes micronutrients, and hold off during the June 1 to September 30 ban.
  • Cut out dead or broken culms at ground level each year to keep the clump open and the color showing.
  • Leave fallen leaves under the clump as mulch, but keep them out of pools and drains.

What to watch for

  • It sheds leaves year-round, so site it away from pools and gutters.
  • Spider mites and scale can show up on bamboo that dries out.

Bamboo Asian Lemon questions we hear

How tall does Asian Lemon bamboo get in Florida?+

Expect 20 to 30 ft over several years, with culms about 1 to 1.5 inches thick and a tight clump 6 to 10 ft wide. Growth is fast in the rainy season, and each year's new culms come in taller until the clump matures.

Is Asian Lemon bamboo clumping or running?+

It is a clumping bamboo, so it widens slowly from the center instead of sending runners across your yard. Give it 4 to 5 ft of room from fences and walls, expect the clump to grow a few inches wider each year, and cut out old culms at the base now and then.

How cold can Asian Lemon bamboo take?+

It is rated hardy to roughly 20°F, which is colder than Southwest Florida normally gets. Young plants and leaf tips can burn in a hard frost, particularly inland in Lehigh Acres and North Fort Myers. Wait for new growth before cutting back anything that looks brown.
