Golden Goddess Bamboo, Delivered and Planted in SW Florida
A clumping hedge bamboo, Golden Goddess grows fast in Southwest Florida and makes a dense, fine-textured privacy screen without running across the yard. It handles full sun or part shade, stays far shorter than the giant timber bamboos, and fills a narrow side yard quickly. The clump widens slowly instead of sending out runners, so it needs no root barrier.

Where Bamboo Golden Goddess works in a SW Florida yard
Plant Golden Goddess in a single row along a fence or property line for a soft green wall that moves in the breeze. It suits narrow side yards, where its clump stays tight, and backdrops behind a patio.
Mix in ti plants, bromeliads or ginger at the base to hide the lower stems. Keep it a few feet off walls and fences so the clump has room to widen.
- Fast privacy hedge
- Narrow side-yard screen
- Patio backdrop
- Large container plantings
How our crew plants it
Space plants 4 to 5 ft apart for a hedge, each set level with the soil in a hole twice as wide as the pot. We water in deeply and mulch several inches deep, leaving fallen leaves in place since they feed the clump.
New plants need regular water through the first dry season, with extra watering allowed under Lee and Collier rules.
Care after planting
- Leave the fallen leaves under the clump as mulch, since they feed it.
- Feed three times a year with a slow-release fertilizer, skipping June 1 to September 30 in Lee County, Naples and Marco Island.
- Thin out the oldest, weakest stems at the base each year to keep the clump open and healthy.
- Water deeply through the dry season, since a thirsty clump rolls its leaves and drops them.
What to watch for
- Bamboo that dries out drops leaves and browns at the tips, and a hard freeze can brown the foliage too, though the clump normally regrows.
Bamboo Golden Goddess questions we hear
Does Golden Goddess bamboo spread like running bamboo?+
No. Golden Goddess is a clumping bamboo, so the clump widens slowly from the center instead of sending runners across the yard. That makes it a safer choice than running types near a fence, pool or neighbor. It still needs room to widen and a little thinning over time.
How far apart should I plant Golden Goddess bamboo for privacy?+
Plant Golden Goddess 4 to 5 ft apart, center to center, for a hedge that closes in a few seasons. Closer spacing fills in faster but needs more thinning later. A single row is enough for most side yards, and larger pots give you a taller screen sooner.
How tall does Golden Goddess bamboo get, and can I keep it shorter?+
Expect about 8 to 15 ft in most yards, much shorter than giant timber bamboos. You can keep it shorter by cutting the tallest canes back to a joint, which also makes the clump bushier. Thin the oldest canes at the base so light and air reach the center.
