Emerald Bamboo, Delivered and Planted for Tall Privacy
Emerald bamboo is the tall, clumping choice when a privacy wall needs to reach 25 to 35 ft, such as screening a neighbor's second story, and it grows well across Southwest Florida. It stays in a tight clump instead of running. Delivered 15 and 25 gallon clumps get planted at the right depth, watered in, and cleaned up after by our crew.

Where Bamboo Emerald works in a SW Florida yard
Choose Emerald over graceful bamboo when height matters more than a narrow footprint. Its thick, straight green canes carry few low branches, so it works as a tall, airy wall behind a fence or lower shrubs, not as a dense hedge at eye level.
Plant it along a back property line, then fill the lower space in front with clusia, cocoplum or ornamental ginger.
- Tall privacy walls
- Screening second-story views
- Wind and noise buffers
- Back-of-lot tropical backdrops
How our crew plants it
Space clumps 5 to 8 ft apart, 5 ft off walls and property lines. Plant each at the depth it grew in the container, in a hole about twice as wide, and water in. Mulch off the canes and stake the 25 gallon clumps until they root.
Because Lee and Collier allow extra watering on new plantings, soak the clumps daily at first.
Care after planting
- Water deeply through the dry season, November to May, since bamboo that dries out drops leaves quickly.
- Fertilize with a slow-release, nitrogen-rich product in spring and again in October, outside the Lee County, Naples and Marco Island June 1 to September 30 ban on nitrogen and phosphorus.
- Leave fallen leaves under the clump as mulch, and cut dead or crowded canes at the ground once a year.
- Cut out broken canes before storm season so the clump flexes in wind.
What to watch for
- Bamboo mites and scale show up in dry weather as speckled, yellowing leaves, so rinse the foliage hard and treat early with horticultural oil.
- Tall canes shed leaves year round and can lean after storms, so keep the clump clear of pool cages and roofs.
Bamboo Emerald questions we hear
How tall does Emerald bamboo get in Florida?+
Emerald bamboo commonly reaches 25 to 35 ft in Florida, and some clumps climb to 40 ft over time. It starts tall: our 15 gallon clumps usually arrive 12 to 14 ft tall and the 25 gallon clumps 16 to 18 ft, so you get screening height from day one rather than waiting years.
Is Emerald bamboo clumping or running?+
Clumping. Emerald bamboo grows in a tight clump with new canes rising beside the old ones, so it does not run underground into a neighbor's yard the way golden bamboo and other running bamboos do. Give the clump 5 ft from walls and fences so it has room to widen.
How far apart should I plant Emerald bamboo for privacy?+
Plant clumps 5 to 8 ft apart, center to center, for a screen that closes in a couple of years. Closer spacing fills faster, while wider spacing leaves gaps early but is easier on water and feeding. Stay at least 5 ft off fences, walls and property lines.
