Graceful Bamboo, Delivered and Planted in SW Florida

If you need a narrow privacy screen that stays put, graceful bamboo is the clumping bamboo to plant in Southwest Florida. It grows fast, holds a tight clump instead of running, and reaches about 20 to 30 ft with fine, feathery leaves on slender canes. Our crew sets each clump at the right depth, waters it in, and cleans up. Sizes run 7, 15, 25 and 60 gallon.

Where Bamboo Graceful works in a SW Florida yard

Graceful bamboo earns its place where you need height in a narrow strip: a side yard, a fence line, or the back line of a lot. A single row of clumps closes into a green wall that takes about 5 or 6 ft of width yet rises 20 ft or more, high enough to screen a second-story window that no hedge will cover.

Underplant with ornamental ginger or cast iron plant, and set a flowering shrub such as hibiscus in front so the screen reads as a backdrop.

  • Narrow privacy screens
  • Side yards and fence lines
  • Sight and wind buffers
  • Tropical backdrop planting

How our crew plants it

Give each clump a hole twice as wide as the container and no deeper than the root ball, so the top of the root ball sits flush with the surrounding soil. Backfill with native sand and water in. Space clumps 4 to 6 ft apart for a screen, and keep them 5 ft off walls and property lines.

Mulch 2 to 3 inches, pulled back from the canes, and stake the 25 and 60 gallon clumps until roots anchor. Lee and Collier allow extra watering for new plantings, so water daily at first, then taper to your assigned days.

Care after planting

  • Water deeply through the dry season, November to May; bamboo that dries out drops leaves fast and browns at the tips.
  • Feed in spring and again in October with a slow-release, nitrogen-rich fertilizer, since Lee County, Naples and Marco Island ban nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer from June 1 to September 30.
  • Leave fallen leaves under the clump as mulch, and cut dead or crowded canes at ground level once a year in late winter.
  • Before storm season, cut out broken or leaning canes so the clump stays open and flexible in wind.

What to watch for

  • Bamboo mites and scale show up in dry spells as speckled, yellowing leaves; a hard rinse with water and an early horticultural oil spray are the usual first steps.
  • It sheds fine leaves year round, so keep it at least 10 ft from pool cages, skimmers and gutters.

Bamboo Graceful questions we hear

How fast does graceful bamboo grow in Florida?+

Fast. Once it is established, a clump can add several feet of height a year, and new canes come up in the warm, wet months, each taller than the last until the clump reaches its mature 20 to 30 ft. A larger container starts taller and denser, so it reaches screen height sooner.

How far apart should I plant graceful bamboo for privacy?+

Plant clumps 4 to 6 ft apart, center to center. Closer spacing closes the screen faster, and wider spacing gives each clump room to fill out. Keep at least 5 ft between the clumps and any wall, fence or property line, because each clump widens a little every year.

Is graceful bamboo invasive, and will it spread into my neighbor's yard?+

No. Graceful bamboo is a clumping type, so new canes come up beside the old ones instead of running underground the way golden bamboo and other running bamboos do. The clump widens slowly, which is why a 5 ft setback from the property line is enough.

Will graceful bamboo survive a freeze or a hurricane in Southwest Florida?+

Usually, yes. The canes are hardy far below the cold Lee and Collier see, though leaves can scorch in a hard freeze and flush back in spring. Flexible canes bend in storm winds, but a hurricane can snap or flatten tall ones, so cut out damaged canes afterward and the clump recovers.

Which size graceful bamboo should I buy for a privacy screen?+

It depends on how fast you want height. We carry 7, 15, 25 and 60 gallon clumps. A 15 gallon clump usually arrives 12 to 14 ft tall, a 25 gallon 15 to 18 ft, and a 60 gallon around 17 to 20 ft, while a 7 gallon is a good way to fill a long run if you can wait a few seasons.

How much does graceful bamboo cost to have delivered and planted?+

Price depends on the container size, how many clumps you need and how easy the site is to reach, so we text a planted price instead of quoting a flat number. Send the length of the screen and the size you want, and we usually reply within the hour during the day. Half down holds the plants and a delivery day.
