Bamboo Palms, Delivered and Planted in SW Florida

Bamboo palm is a slender, clustering palm that does well in SW Florida shade and part shade, with thin canes and soft fronds that give a bamboo look without a bamboo's wandering roots. It stops around 6 to 10 feet and screens a narrow strip along a wall or lanai. We deliver and plant 7, 15 and 25 gallon clumps.

Where Bamboo Palm works in a SW Florida yard

Bamboo palm gives a soft tropical screen where sun is limited: along a north or east wall, beside the lanai or pool cage, between side-yard windows and a fence, or in a big pot at a shaded entry. Its clumps stay put instead of running. Boston fern, cast iron plant and philodendron fill in at its feet.

  • Shaded narrow screen
  • Lanai and pool-cage beds
  • North and east walls
  • Under-tree understory

How our crew plants it

Plant in part shade, in a hole twice as wide as the root ball and no deeper, with the top of the ball at soil level. Space clumps 3 to 4 feet apart for a screen.

Our crew waters it in and cleans up. Lee and Collier allow extra watering on new plantings, so soak often at first. Keep mulch off the canes.

Care after planting

  • Keep the soil evenly moist, and move or shade it if the fronds turn yellow, which usually means too much sun.
  • Feed in spring and fall with an 8-2-12 palm fertilizer with micronutrients, skipping June 1 to September 30 in Lee County, Naples and Marco Island, and watch for pale new fronds that signal manganese or magnesium shortages.
  • Cut old canes at the base to thin and renew a crowded clump.
  • Cover young clumps on frost nights.

What to watch for

  • Spider mites leave stippled, dull fronds in hot, dry, sheltered spots, and hosing the undersides or using insecticidal soap clears them.
  • The small fruits are a mild skin irritant, so wear gloves when cleaning them up.

Bamboo Palm questions we hear

How tall does a bamboo palm get in Florida?+

Most clumps reach 6 to 10 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide, with slender cane-like stems. Growth is moderate, not fast, and the clump thickens over the years. That size is why it works for narrow screens and tight beds.

Can a bamboo palm grow in full sun in SW Florida?+

It prefers shade or part shade. Established plants handle morning sun, but hot afternoon sun yellows and bleaches the fronds. If you want a sun-tolerant screening palm, areca palm is a better fit.

Is bamboo palm safe for cats and dogs?+

The ASPCA lists bamboo palm (Chamaedorea seifrizii) as non-toxic to dogs and cats. The small fruits can irritate skin, and chewing any plant can still upset a pet's stomach, so keep fallen fruit cleaned up.
