Needle Palms, Delivered and Planted in SW Florida
Needle palm is a slow, shrubby, clumping palm native to moist Florida woods and floodplains, with fans of dark green leaves and sharp black spines at the base. It does best in Southwest Florida in shade with moist soil and regular water. It makes a low accent for shady beds, but the needles can stab, so keep it away from walkways.
- Light:
- Part shade to shade; full sun only with steady moisture
- Water:

Where Needle Palm works in a SW Florida yard
Needle palm fits shady, moist spots under oaks or at the edge of a native planting, where its fan leaves make a low, dense clump. Keep it at least 4 to 5 ft from walkways, patios, pool decks and play areas, because the sharp black needles run 6 to 10 inches long.
Saw palmetto, coontie and wild coffee are good partners. Give it shade and mulch, since hot, dry sun stalls it.
- Shady accent palm
- Native understory planting
- Spiny barrier under windows
How our crew plants it
Pick a shaded, moist spot, and wear heavy gloves around it, since the needles puncture skin. Dig twice as wide as the root ball and no deeper, set the crown level with the soil and mulch 3 inches deep. The crew sets it, waters it in and cleans up. Lee and Collier allow extra watering for new plantings.
Care after planting
- Keep the soil moist through the first dry season, since after that it tolerates dry spells but looks best with regular water.
- Spring and early fall are the times for an 8-2-12 palm fertilizer with micronutrients, and the June 1 to September 30 ban means none in summer.
- Mulch 3 inches deep to hold moisture and keep the roots cool.
- Wear heavy gloves and long sleeves for any trimming or cleanup near the clump.
What to watch for
- The needles are 6 to 10 inches long, black and sharp enough to puncture skin, so keep it away from paths, pool decks and play areas.
- It prefers moist, shady sites, and hot, dry, sunny spots in our sandy soil cause leaf burn and stalled growth.
Needle Palm questions we hear
Is needle palm native to Florida?+
Yes. It is native to moist woods, floodplains and swamps of the Southeast, including north and central Florida. It is not a local plant in Lee and Collier, but it fits shady spots with moist soil. Wild plants are protected, so buy only nursery-grown plants.
Is needle palm a good choice for Southwest Florida?+
It can be, in the right spot. It likes shade, moist soil and regular water, and its extreme cold hardiness does not matter here. Hot, dry, full-sun spots in sandy soil stress it. It is also slow, so it makes a patient plant, not a fast filler.
How dangerous are needle palm spines?+
The long black needles on the trunk and leaf bases are sharp enough to puncture skin, so treat them like thorns. Place the palm at least 4 to 5 ft from walkways, patios and play areas, and wear heavy gloves when you work near it. The needles are also what make it a good barrier planting.
