European Fan Palms, Delivered and Planted in SW Florida
Sunny, well-drained spots suit European fan palm, a slow, compact, clumping palm that stays low and handles heat, drought and cold well in Southwest Florida. Stiff blue-green to green fans make it a tough specimen. Its leaf stalks carry sharp spines, so place it away from walkways and play areas.
- Light:
- Full sun to part shade
- Water:
- Low to moderate; drought tolerant once established, and it dislikes constantly wet soil
- Salt:
- Moderate; takes light salt spray

Where European Fan Palm works in a SW Florida yard
Use European fan palm as a compact specimen in a sunny courtyard, at an entry or in a dry bed with agave and muhly grass, where its clustered stems and fan leaves add form without towering. Keep it out of lanes people walk along and away from pool decks and kids' play areas, because the leaf stalks carry sharp spines.
- Compact specimen palm
- Courtyard and entry accent
- Dry, sunny beds
- Mediterranean-style landscapes
How our crew plants it
Keep trunk bases clear of soil and mulch. We set the 15 gallon palm at the depth it grew, with the top of the root ball level with the soil, in a hole about twice as wide, and backfill with native sand. We water in well, and Lee and Collier allow extra watering on new plantings.
Care after planting
- Feed two or three times a year with an 8-2-12 palm fertilizer that includes micronutrients, skipping June 1 to September 30 in Lee County, Naples and Marco Island.
- Yellowing or frizzled fronds point to potassium, magnesium or manganese deficiency in our sandy, alkaline soil, and a palm fertilizer with micronutrients is the fix.
- Remove only fully brown fronds, and wear thick gloves and eye protection because the leaf stalks have sharp spines.
- Water new palms regularly, then rely on rain, since this palm resents a constantly wet root zone.
What to watch for
- The leaf stalks carry sharp spines that can puncture skin, so keep it away from walkways, pool decks and play areas.
- Fungal leaf spots and root rot can show up in humid summers and soggy beds, so plant it in well-drained sun.
European Fan Palm questions we hear
Does European fan palm do well in Southwest Florida?+
Yes, in a sunny, well-drained spot. It tolerates heat, drought and cold, and it is slow and compact, so it is easy to place. It prefers drier conditions, so avoid beds that stay wet in the rainy season, and feed it with a palm fertilizer that includes micronutrients.
How big does a European fan palm get, and how fast?+
It is a slow grower that usually reaches 6 to 12 ft tall and 6 to 10 ft wide, often with several trunks. The compact size is the appeal, so it will not outgrow a courtyard or entry bed the way a queen or royal palm will. Expect to wait years, not months, for height.
Are European fan palm spines dangerous for kids and pets?+
The spines are sharp and can puncture skin, so keep this palm away from walkways, pool decks and play areas. They line the leaf stalks. For spots where kids and pets play, choose a spine-free palm such as a foxtail instead.
