Where Cape Honeysuckle works in a SW Florida yard

Use cape honeysuckle as a big, loose, flowering hedge along a fence or property line, or train it up a wall or trellis as a vine. The orange-red flowers peak in the cooler months, when little else blooms, and hummingbirds follow.

It needs full sun and room, and it sprawls if you skip pruning. Plumbago, firebush and lantana keep the color going around it.

  • Hummingbird gardens
  • Informal flowering hedges
  • Fence and wall cover
  • Sunny coastal beds

How our crew plants it

Plant in full sun in a hole 2 to 3 times as wide as the container and no deeper. For a hedge, set plants 4 to 6 ft apart; for a vine, put it 1 to 2 ft from the wall or fence with something to climb.

Mulch, water in, and use the extra watering allowed for new plantings in Lee and Collier, then taper.

Care after planting

  • Prune in late winter or early spring to hold the shape and push new growth and flowers.
  • Water new plants regularly, then give established plants an occasional deep soak in the dry season.
  • Feed lightly in spring, and skip nitrogen and phosphorus from June 1 to September 30 in Lee County, Naples and Marco Island.
  • After a freeze, wait until spring to cut back burned growth.

What to watch for

  • Left unpruned it sprawls and sends up suckers, so plan on regular trimming.

Cape Honeysuckle questions we hear

When does cape honeysuckle bloom in Florida?+

Fall through spring. Orange-red tubular flowers peak in the cooler months and draw hummingbirds. A freeze can cut a flush short, and pruning in late winter encourages the next round of growth and flowers.

Is cape honeysuckle good for a hedge?+

Yes, as an informal flowering hedge. It grows 6 to 10 ft, takes shearing and handles salt and drought, so it suits fences and property lines. It is looser than a clipped podocarpus or clusia hedge, and heavy constant shearing cuts back the flowers.

Is cape honeysuckle salt tolerant?+

Yes, fairly. It handles salt spray and sandy soil, which is why it shows up near the coast, but it does not like standing saltwater. Give new plants regular water until they are established, and keep them back from the waterline.
