Tecoma Orange Shrubs, Delivered and Planted in SW Florida

Tecoma Orange is a fast-growing flowering shrub that loves Southwest Florida's heat, with orange trumpet blooms on and off nearly all year that draw hummingbirds and butterflies. It reaches 6 to 12 feet, so it works as a loose screen, a tall background shrub or a small multi-trunk tree. It needs full sun and fast-draining soil. We deliver and plant it in 3 gallon.

Where Tecoma Orange works in a SW Florida yard

Plant Tecoma Orange in full sun along a fence, at the back of a bed or in a corner where its height has room, 5 to 6 feet apart for a loose, flowering screen. It is not a formal clipped hedge.

Pair it with firebush, pentas and muhly grass in front for color through the seasons. Keep it back from walkways, since fast growth fills in space quickly.

  • Flowering privacy screens
  • Hummingbird and butterfly gardens
  • Tall background shrubs
  • Fast color in full sun

How our crew plants it

Dig the hole twice as wide as the pot and no deeper, and set the root ball level with the soil. Space plants 4 to 6 feet apart for a screen. New plantings can be watered extra under Lee and Collier rules, then back off, since Tecoma prefers to dry out between waterings.

Care after planting

  • Prune in late winter, after cold danger passes, to shape the plant and cut out freeze-burned growth, and trim lightly after heavy bloom flushes to keep it full.
  • Water new plants regularly, then let established plants dry between waterings, since overwatering invites root rot and leggy growth.
  • One light spring feeding with a slow-release shrub fertilizer is enough, and nitrogen and phosphorus products stay off the menu from June 1 to September 30 under the Lee County, Naples and Marco Island ban.
  • Cut off seed pods if you do not want volunteer seedlings.

What to watch for

  • Fast growth makes soft, top-heavy wood that can break in storm winds, so thin and cut it back before hurricane season.
  • Without regular pruning it turns leggy and sparse at the base, so plan on a yearly shaping.

Tecoma Orange questions we hear

Is Tecoma Orange good for hummingbirds in Florida?+

Yes. The orange trumpet flowers are a favorite of hummingbirds and also draw bees and butterflies, and the plant blooms for much of the year in SW Florida. Full sun gives the most flowers. Plant it near a window or patio so you can watch the visitors.

How big does Tecoma Orange get, and how fast?+

It is fast, typically reaching 6 to 12 feet tall and 4 to 8 feet wide within a few years. Regular pruning keeps it full and in bounds. Give it 5 to 6 feet between plants for a screen, and place it where the height and spread have room.

How cold can Tecoma Orange take in SW Florida?+

Leaves and tips burn around 30 to 32°F, and a hard freeze can cut it to the ground. It usually resprouts from the base in spring. Coastal Lee and Collier winters are mild enough, but inland spots like Lehigh Acres may see it freeze back, so cut off dead growth after the last cold snap.
