Where Pink Powderpuff works in a SW Florida yard

Pink powderpuff works as a large, loose flowering shrub at the back of a sunny bed, a casual screen along a fence, or a specimen near a patio where you can watch the hummingbirds.

Give it 6 to 8 ft of width and let it arch rather than shearing it into a box. Firebush, plumbago and pentas share its sun and its butterfly crowd.

  • Hummingbird and butterfly plant
  • Large specimen shrub
  • Back-of-bed color

How our crew plants it

Pick a full-sun spot first, then dig a hole twice as wide as the pot and no deeper. Our crew sets the top of the root ball level with the soil, backfills with native sand, waters it in and cleans up.

Space screen plants 6 to 8 ft apart. Mulch 2 inches, off the stems. Lee and Collier allow extra watering for new plantings.

Care after planting

  • Water regularly until established, then your assigned days plus rain are enough; it tolerates dry spells but blooms best with some moisture.
  • Prune lightly after a bloom flush to shape it and keep it to the size you want, and skip heavy shearing, which removes flower buds.
  • Extra nitrogen means leaves over flowers, so feed lightly in spring and early fall, and not at all with nitrogen or phosphorus June 1 to September 30.
  • Cover young plants on frost nights if you are inland.

Pink Powderpuff questions we hear

Does pink powderpuff attract hummingbirds and butterflies?+

Yes. The nectar-rich puffball flowers draw hummingbirds and butterflies, and it flowers on and off through much of the year. Plant it in full sun where you can watch from a patio or window, and skip pesticides that would harm the visitors.

How big does pink powderpuff get, and can I keep it smaller?+

Plan on 8 to 12 ft tall and wide if you leave it alone. It responds well to light pruning after a bloom flush if you want it smaller. Give it 6 to 8 ft of width, and avoid heavy shearing, which removes the flower buds.

How much sun does pink powderpuff need?+

Full sun for the best flowering. It will grow in a little afternoon shade but blooms less, and in heavy shade it turns leggy. Once established it handles heat and short dry spells, but it still wants regular water while it is new.
