Where Crossandra Orange works in a SW Florida yard
Crossandra brings orange color to shady spots where most flowering plants quit. Use it at the front of foundation beds, in groups of three or five along an entry, or in large pots on a sheltered lanai.
It pairs well with green and variegated foliage such as ti plant, cast iron plant and bromeliads. Give it a warm, protected spot rather than an open exposure.
- Shady flower color
- Foundation and entry beds
- Containers and planters
- Under high tree canopy
How our crew plants it
Plant crossandra in well-drained soil with the top of the root ball level with the bed, spacing plants 18 to 24 inches apart. We water in well and mulch 2 inches deep. Lee and Collier allow extra watering for new plantings, so keep the soil moist every day or two at first. Plant in spring so roots settle before winter.
Care after planting
- Keep the soil evenly moist, since crossandra wilts quickly when it dries out, but never let it stand in water.
- Pinch the tips of young plants to keep them full, and trim spent flower spikes.
- Feed lightly in spring and early fall with a slow-release fertilizer, skipping nitrogen and phosphorus products from June 1 to September 30 where local rules ban them.
- Cover or move potted plants on cold nights, and cut back damaged growth after the last frost.
What to watch for
- Cold is its limit: leaves drop in cool spells and a frost can kill it, so treat it as a plant you may replace after a hard winter.
- Spider mites show up in dry weather and root rot follows soggy soil, so water at the base and keep beds draining.
Crossandra Orange questions we hear
Does crossandra grow in full sun in Florida?+
It does best in part shade, with morning sun and afternoon shade. Full sun in a SW Florida summer scorches the leaves and wilts the plant, even with good watering. Under tree canopies, on the east side of the house or in a sheltered entry bed, it flowers well without the scorch.
Will crossandra survive a cold snap in Cape Coral?+
It is very cold-tender. Leaves drop in cool spells, and a frost can kill it. Coastal Lee and Collier usually escape the worst, but plant it in a warm, sheltered spot and cover it on frost nights. Inland sites like Lehigh Acres may need replanting after a hard winter.
How often do I water crossandra?+
New plants need water every day or two for the first few weeks, using the extra watering Lee and Collier allow for new plantings. After that, keep the soil evenly moist and water on your assigned days, adding a hand-watering in dry weeks. It wilts quickly when dry but rots in soggy ground.
