Where Epidendrum Orchid Orange works in a SW Florida yard
Reed-stem epidendrums give you orchid color without mounting orchids on trees. Plant them in the ground in a bed with morning sun, as a tall groundcover under open shade, or in a large pot by the entry.
The canes lean on each other as the clump widens, so they fill a space naturally. Bromeliads, heliconia and ground orchids make good companions.

- Containers and entry pots
How our crew plants it
Plant epidendrum in well-drained soil where it gets morning sun, with the root mass level with the bed and the canes not buried. Space plants 2 to 3 feet apart; they fill the gaps as the clump widens.
We water in well and mulch lightly with coarse chips. Lee and Collier allow extra watering for new plantings, so water every day or two at first.
Care after planting
- Water regularly in the dry season and let the surface dry between waterings, since it needs fast drainage.
- Feed lightly in spring and early fall with a balanced fertilizer, skipping nitrogen and phosphorus products from June 1 to September 30 where local rules ban them.
- Cut back old, leggy canes to the base and divide crowded clumps in spring.
- Cover with frost cloth on cold nights, and trim cold-burned growth after the danger passes.
What to watch for
- Scale, mealybugs and snails are the usual pests, and soggy soil at the base leads to rot, so keep it on well-drained ground.
Epidendrum Orchid Orange questions we hear
Does epidendrum orchid need sun or shade in Florida?+
Morning sun with some afternoon shade is ideal. It tolerates more sun, and bright light brings more flowers, but strong afternoon sun in summer can stress the plant. Under open tree shade it still grows but flowers less.
Will an epidendrum orchid survive a cold snap in Cape Coral?+
It is a tropical plant, so frost burns the foliage and canes. Cover it on frost nights and plant it in a warm, protected spot. Coastal Lee and Collier usually escape the worst, and burned plants often regrow from healthy canes and the base once the weather warms.
Can I plant epidendrum orchids in the ground?+
Yes. Reed-stem types are meant for beds and do fine in plain, well-drained sandy soil. Set them with the roots at soil level, don't bury the canes, and space them 2 to 3 feet apart. They spread slowly into a clump, and you can divide it later.
