Where Guava Tree works in a SW Florida yard
Plant guava in a sunny corner of the yard where you can reach the fruit and sweep up drops, not along a preserve edge or canal bank. Prune it to 8 to 12 ft so harvest is easy and the tree stays dense. It pairs well with banana, papaya and dragon fruit in a mixed tropical fruit corner.
- Backyard fruit and jam
- Edible landscape corner
- Fast small fruit tree
How our crew plants it
Guava gets a hole twice as wide as the pot, the root ball level with the soil, native soil as backfill and a few inches of mulch kept off the trunk. Our crew waters the tree in and cleans up.
Lee and Collier relax the normal watering schedule for new plantings, so keep a new tree on frequent watering for the first couple of months.
Care after planting
- Fertilize about three times a year, in late winter, late spring and October, because Lee County, Naples and Marco Island ban nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer June 1 to September 30.
- Prune after the main harvest to hold the tree at 8 to 12 ft, and cut off root suckers before they form a thicket.
- Pick up fallen fruit often, since it draws fruit flies and spreads seed.
- Cover small trees with frost cloth on freezing nights inland.
What to watch for
- Common guava is a Category I invasive on Florida's list for central and south Florida, because suckers form dense stands and wildlife spread the seed, so plant it only in a yard away from preserves, canals and vacant land, pull suckers, and choose native Simpson's stopper if you back up to natural areas.
- Caribbean fruit fly commonly infests guava fruit, so pick ripe fruit promptly and clean up drops.
Guava Tree questions we hear
Is guava invasive in Florida?+
Yes, common guava is a Category I plant on Florida's invasive list for central and south Florida. Suckers form dense thickets and wildlife spread the seed into natural areas. Plant it only in a yard away from preserves, pick up drops, cut suckers, and consider native Simpson's stopper near natural land.
How long until a guava tree bears fruit?+
Usually 2 to 4 years from planting, with sweet, fragrant fruit. Full sun, steady water and regular feeding help it along. Keeping the tree pruned to 8 to 12 ft also keeps the harvest within easy reach.
How big does a guava tree get, and can I keep it small?+
Left alone, guava reaches 10 to 20 ft or more. You can hold it at 8 to 12 ft with regular pruning after harvest, which also keeps it dense and fruiting where you can pick. Cut suckers at the base so it stays a single tree.
