Jacaranda Trees, Delivered and Planted in SW Florida

Jacaranda grows well in Southwest Florida and covers itself in lavender-blue blooms in late spring, but it is a large, fern-leafed tree that needs full sun, good drainage and plenty of room. It suits a big yard better than a tight lot. We deliver and plant 25 gallon jacarandas, set at the right depth and watered in.

Where Jacaranda Tree works in a SW Florida yard

Give a jacaranda open lawn or a large bed where its wide, airy crown can spread and its fallen blossoms can carpet the ground without landing on a pool deck or driveway. The light, dappled shade lets grass and sun-loving perennials grow beneath it.

Keep it 20 ft or more from the house, and pair it with society garlic, blue daze or plumbago at the base.

  • Spring-blooming shade tree
  • Large lawn specimen
  • Street and driveway tree
  • Open yard focal point

How our crew plants it

A 25 gallon tree gets a hole two to three times as wide as the root ball and no deeper, root flare slightly above grade. Our crew backfills with native sand, waters it in and cleans up.

Stake the first season with soft ties. Mulch 2 to 3 inches, off the trunk. Lee and Collier allow extra watering for new plantings.

Care after planting

  • Prune young trees to one strong leader and well-spaced branches, because jacaranda wood can be brittle and good structure helps in summer storms.
  • Go easy on nitrogen, which grows leaves at the expense of flowers; Lee County, Naples and Marco Island already ban nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer June 1 to September 30.
  • Water deeply and regularly for the first year, then let rain and your assigned days carry it.
  • Expect a short leaf drop in late winter or early spring, around the time it blooms.

What to watch for

  • Flowers, leaves and woody seed pods drop heavily, so it is messy over pools, patios and parked cars.
  • Limbs can be brittle and snap in hurricane-force wind, so pick the planting spot and train the tree with that in mind.

Jacaranda Tree questions we hear

Do jacaranda trees grow in Southwest Florida?+

Yes. They grow well in full sun and well-drained soil, and they bloom lavender-blue in late spring, with the show varying from year to year. Leaves drop for a short time before new growth. Salt spray, soggy soil and hard freezes are the limits.

How big does a jacaranda tree get?+

Plan on 25 to 40 ft tall and 20 to 30 ft wide at maturity. That needs space, so keep it 20 ft or more from the house, the pool and power lines, and give the crown open sky.

When does jacaranda bloom in Florida?+

Mostly in late spring, from about April into June, in clusters of trumpet-shaped lavender flowers while the tree is partly bare. Heavy shade or too much nitrogen cuts the bloom, and a young tree can take a few seasons to flower heavily.
