Tabebuia Trumpet Trees, Delivered and Planted in SW Florida
Tabebuias are the trumpet trees that turn Cape Coral and Fort Myers streets yellow or pink for a few weeks each spring. They like our heat, sun and sandy soil, and once rooted they need little water. They work best as a single specimen where the bloom can be seen from the road or a window. We stock golden and pink forms, delivered and planted by our crew.

Where Tabebuia Trumpet Tree works in a SW Florida yard
Give a tabebuia open space and full sun. It looks best as one tree in a front lawn, at a driveway bend, or in a bed with room for a wide crown. Keep it 20 ft or more from the house and well back from a pool, since spent flowers carpet the ground for a week or two.
Underplant with sun-loving, drought-tolerant plants like Blue Daze, Bulbine and Muhly Grass, which stay low and let the bloom show. A pair flanking an entry also works on a wide lot.
- Spring-flowering specimen tree
- Front yard focal point
- Driveway or street-edge tree
- Sunny lawn accent
How our crew plants it
Pick the spot before you buy: full sun, good drainage and room overhead. The hole should be two to three times as wide as the root ball and no deeper, so the top of the ball sits level with or a hair above the soil. Circling roots get teased or sliced loose, then the hole is backfilled with native soil, ringed for water, mulched away from the trunk and soaked.
Stake loosely only if the tree needs it. Lee and Collier allow extra watering on new plantings, which matters most in the first couple of months.
Care after planting
- Water new trees on the extra schedule allowed for new plantings, then taper to your assigned two days as the roots spread.
- Prune young trees to one leader with well-spaced branches, and prune right after bloom so you do not cut off next year's flowers.
- Go easy on nitrogen and winter water, since too much of either tends to push leaves at the expense of flowers.
- Skip fertilizer with nitrogen or phosphorus from June 1 to September 30 in Lee County, Naples and Marco Island, and use a light slow-release feed in spring if the tree needs it.
- Keep mulch a few inches back from the trunk and keep string trimmers off the bark.
What to watch for
- The wood turns brittle with age and branches can break in storm winds, so build good structure while the tree is young and plant it well away from the house.
- The pink trumpet tree Tabebuia heterophylla is on the Florida Invasive Species Council's Category II list for South Florida because it can seed into natural areas, so for lots that border preserves or wetlands we steer people to the golden trumpet or a native flowering tree.
Tabebuia Trumpet Tree questions we hear
When do tabebuia trees bloom in Southwest Florida?+
Golden trumpet trees usually bloom from late winter into April, and pink forms follow in spring. A flush lasts a couple of weeks, with scattered flowers after. Blooms often come after a dry spell, and a heavy rain can knock the flowers down early.
How big does a tabebuia get?+
Plan on 20 to 35 ft tall and 15 to 30 ft wide, depending on the species. The golden trumpet is the bigger, faster grower. Light pruning right after bloom can hold the size down some, but a lot that cannot hold a wide crown is better served by a smaller tree.
How close to the house or pool can I plant a trumpet tree?+
Keep it at least 20 ft from the house and farther from a pool. The wood turns brittle with age and storm winds can snap limbs, and spent flowers drop for a week or two. A spot at the lawn edge or along the driveway gives it room to spread.
Why is my tabebuia not blooming?+
The usual causes are too much shade, too much nitrogen or water, or a very young tree. Heavy pruning at the wrong time also removes flower buds, so prune right after bloom. Give it full sun, ease off winter irrigation and fertilizer, and it often blooms the next spring.
Is the pink trumpet tree invasive in Florida?+
One pink species, Tabebuia heterophylla, is on the Florida Invasive Species Council's Category II list for South Florida because it can seed into natural areas. The list is a warning for land managers, not a law. Golden trumpet trees are not on it, so they are the safer pick if your lot borders a preserve or wetland.
What does it cost to plant a tabebuia?+
Price depends on the species, the size and how many trees you want, so we text a planted price instead of quoting a range. Send a request with your address and what you have in mind, and you usually hear back within the hour during the day. Half down holds the tree and a delivery day.
