Orange Geiger Trees, Delivered and Planted in SW Florida
Orange Geiger tree is a small, rounded flowering tree built for Southwest Florida's heat, sun, salt and sandy soil. Clusters of orange-red flowers show up most of the year, heaviest in summer, on a slow-growing tree that stays under about 30 feet. Where Orange Geiger Tree works in a SW Florida yard
Put an Orange Geiger where you can see the flowers from a window or patio, such as a front-yard corner, beside a driveway or on a canal-side lot. The crown is rounded, so give it 10 to 15 feet from walls and pool cages.
The dark, rough leaves set off the orange flowers. Pair it with muhly grass, firebush and sea grape, which share its salt and drought tolerance.
- Coastal and canal lots
- Patio and pool shade tree
- Year-round orange color
- Small-yard flowering tree
How our crew plants it
Dig the hole 2 to 3 times as wide as the pot and no deeper, and set the root ball level with the soil. Keep mulch off the trunk. Water in deeply, using the extra watering Lee and Collier allow for new plantings.
Prune lightly in the early years to build one or a few strong trunks, since it needs pruning for strong structure.
Care after planting
- Water new trees regularly for the first few months, then rely on rain and your assigned days, since established trees are drought tolerant.
- Feed lightly in spring with a slow-release fertilizer that includes micronutrients, and leave out nitrogen and phosphorus between June 1 and September 30, when Lee County, Naples and Marco Island ban them.
- Prune in late winter to build structure and thin the crown ahead of hurricane season.
- Cover young trees on frost nights, especially inland.
What to watch for
- The Geiger beetle, caterpillars, scale and mites chew or feed on the leaves in some years, but healthy trees usually grow out of it.
- The white fruits and dropped leaves can litter patios and pool decks, so keep the tree off the deck edge.
Orange Geiger Tree questions we hear
Is Orange Geiger tree salt tolerant for a canal or beach lot?+
Yes, very. UF/IFAS rates its salt-spray tolerance as high and calls it quite brackish-water tolerant, which makes it a favorite on Gulf, bay and canal lots in Cape Coral, Naples and Marco Island. It still needs well-drained soil and protection from hard frost.
How big does an Orange Geiger tree get?+
It is a slow grower that tops out around 20 to 30 feet tall and 15 to 25 feet wide, a good size for a patio or small yard. It is usually multi-trunked and low-branching unless a nursery trains it to a single trunk.
How cold can an Orange Geiger tree take?+
It is not frost hardy. Freezing cold burns the leaves and can kill young trees. Coastal Lee and Collier usually dodge frost, but inland yards in Lehigh Acres and North Fort Myers should cover young trees on cold nights or choose a sheltered spot.
