Dwarf Royal Poincianas, Delivered and Planted in SW Florida
Dwarf royal poinciana gives you the flame-tree show, a wide, flat-topped crown covered in red-orange flowers in late spring and summer, on a smaller tree than the standard. It does well in Southwest Florida's warm, sandy ground but wants full sun, room to spread and protection from hard freezes. It is still a good-sized shade tree.

Where Dwarf Royal Poinciana works in a SW Florida yard
Use it as the one big flowering tree in an open lawn, where the flat crown can spread and the summer bloom shows against blue sky. Keep it at least 20 ft from the house, pool, driveway and septic, because the roots run shallow and wide and the limbs are brittle in storms.
Underplant with plants that tolerate dry shade, such as liriope or society garlic, and keep sprinkler heads off the trunk.

How our crew plants it
Set the top of the root ball 1 to 2 inches above grade in a hole twice as wide as the 25 gallon pot, in full sun, and stake it for the first year. The crew sets it, waters it in and cleans up.
Lee and Collier allow extra water for new plantings. Plant in the warm months so it roots before winter.
Care after planting
- Prune for structure while the tree is young, and avoid large cuts, since royal poinciana heals big wounds poorly.
- Feed lightly in spring with a balanced slow-release fertilizer, and hold off during the June 1 to September 30 nitrogen and phosphorus ban.
- Expect the leaves to drop for a spell in late winter and spring before the flowers, which is normal.
- Cover young trees on frost nights.
What to watch for
- The roots are shallow and spreading, so a tree planted too close can lift pavers and crack edges.
- The wood is brittle and UF/IFAS rates wind resistance as low, so expect broken limbs after a hurricane unless the canopy is kept structurally pruned.
- Hard, flat seed pods up to a couple of feet long drop in winter and spring and need raking.
Dwarf Royal Poinciana questions we hear
How big does a dwarf royal poinciana get?+
Plan on 25 to 40 ft tall with a crown as wide or wider. It is a smaller selection than a standard royal poinciana, which can reach 40 ft tall and 60 ft wide, but it still needs a big, open spot. Keep it 20 ft or more from structures.
When does royal poinciana bloom in Florida?+
The main show is late spring through summer, roughly May to July, when the crown covers over in red-orange flowers. The tree loses leaves in late winter or early spring first, so it looks bare before the bloom. A hard freeze can set it back.
Is royal poinciana safe to plant near the house in hurricane country?+
Not close. UF/IFAS rates its wind resistance as low and notes it heals big wounds poorly, so limbs can break in storms. Plant it well away from the house, pool cage and power lines, keep the canopy structurally pruned while young, and avoid big cuts.
