Mule Palms, Delivered and Planted in SW Florida
Mule palm is a sterile hybrid of pindo palm and queen palm, with a single thick trunk and soft, arching blue-green fronds, and it does well in Southwest Florida. It grows faster than a pindo, shrugs off cold, and skips most of the fruit mess, so it suits a patio or entry specimen. It needs palm fertilizer to look its best.

Where Mule Palm works in a SW Florida yard
Use a mule palm as a single specimen at an entry, beside a patio, or in a staggered group of three where you want a full, graceful crown. Give it 10 to 15 ft from the house, pool cage and power lines, since the fronds arch wide.
Coontie, bulbine and dwarf ixora fit underneath. It reads as a softer, cleaner alternative to a pindo without the heavy fruit drop.
- Tall feather-palm specimen
- Cold-hardy accent palm
- Low-litter pindo alternative
- Entry or patio palm
How our crew plants it
Set a field-grown mule palm with the top of the root ball at the soil line, in a hole twice as wide and no deeper. Brace the trunk with padded stakes for 6 to 12 months.
Water it in, then often for the first weeks, using the extra watering Lee and Collier allow on new plantings. Our crew sets it and cleans up.
Care after planting
- Feed with a slow-release palm fertilizer, about 8-2-12 with micronutrients, in spring and early fall, since like queen palms they can show potassium, magnesium and manganese deficiency in sandy soil, and skip it from June 1 to September 30 under the Lee County, Naples and Marco Island ban.
- Prune only dead, brown fronds, because cutting green fronds starves the palm.
- Keep mulch 3 inches deep in a wide ring, and keep it off the trunk.
- Water deeply through the first dry season, then let rain and your two assigned days carry it.
What to watch for
- Ganoderma butt rot can kill any palm, mule palms included, with no cure, so conks on the lower trunk mean removal and no new palm in that spot.
- Frizzled, yellow new fronds or orange-speckled older fronds point to manganese or potassium deficiency, which is common in sandy soil and fixed with palm fertilizer.
Mule Palm questions we hear
What is a mule palm?+
A mule palm is a sterile hybrid of a pindo palm and a queen palm, so it carries the cold hardiness of one and the vigor of the other. It grows a single trunk with arching blue-green fronds to roughly 15 to 25 ft, and it skips the heavy fruit drop of a pindo.
Is a mule palm better than a queen palm or pindo palm?+
It depends on the job. Mule palms are hardier than queen palms and faster than pindos, with a full crown and less fruit litter. Queen palms are on Florida's Category II invasive list, while a mule palm is a sterile hybrid. All three need palm fertilizer in our sandy soil.
Do mule palms grow well in Southwest Florida?+
Yes, they take Florida heat, humidity and sandy soil well, and cold is no concern. Give them full sun, steady water for the first year, and regular palm fertilizer with micronutrients to prevent yellow, frizzled fronds. Brace new palms for 6 to 12 months and keep the crown full.
