Panama Rose, Delivered and Planted in SW Florida

Panama rose is a compact evergreen shrub that does well in Southwest Florida's heat and blooms on and off most of the year with clusters of pink flowers that butterflies visit. It is best as a low flowering hedge, a poolside accent or a mid-height filler in mixed beds. It wants sun or light shade, and protection from frost.

Where Panama Rose works in a SW Florida yard

Use Panama rose as a mid-height hedge, a pool-side shrub, or a flowering filler behind lower plants. Trim it to 3 to 5 ft and space plants 3 to 4 ft apart for a low hedge. Plumbago, ti plant and bulbine make easy partners. Plant it near a patio or walkway, since the light scent is strongest in the evening.

  • Pink-flowering low hedge
  • Butterfly garden shrub
  • Poolside accent
  • Mixed-bed filler

How our crew plants it

Choose a sunny, well-drained bed. Dig a hole twice the width of the pot, set the root ball level with the ground, and space hedge plants 3 to 4 ft apart. Water in thoroughly and keep it moist daily at first, then taper off; extra watering on new plantings is allowed under Lee and Collier rules.

We handle delivery, planting and cleanup.

Care after planting

  • Trim lightly through the warm months and hard-prune in spring to hold it at 3 to 5 ft.
  • Water regularly while it establishes and through the dry season for the best bloom.
  • Cover young plants on frost nights inland, and wait until spring to cut back damaged stems.
  • Feed lightly in spring and early October, and skip nitrogen and phosphorus from June 1 to September 30.

What to watch for

  • Frost is the main threat, since leaves and flowers burn near 30°F and a hard freeze can cut it to the ground, so inland yards should plant it near the house.

Panama Rose questions we hear

How big does Panama rose get?+

Most stay 3 to 5 ft tall and about as wide when trimmed, and they can reach 6 ft if left alone. It grows moderately fast, so a few trims a year keep it tidy. Plant 3 to 4 ft apart for a low hedge, and keep it a couple of feet off walks.

Does Panama rose bloom all year in Florida?+

Nearly. Panama rose flowers on and off through most of the year in Southwest Florida, even in winter, though a frost can interrupt it. Regular water and a light spring trim help. Butterflies visit the pink clusters, so it is a good pick for a pollinator bed.

Can Panama rose take full sun and cold?+

It takes full sun to part shade and is moderately drought tolerant once established. Cold is the limit: leaves and flowers burn near 30°F, and a hard freeze can cut it back. Coastal Lee and Collier are usually fine, while inland yards should plant it near the house and cover young plants on frost nights.
