Populus Yunna, Delivered and Planted in SW Florida

Populus 'Yunna' is a poplar with a slim, upright shape, sold as a formal alternative to Italian cypress for driveways, entries and screens. Most poplars prefer cooler climates and steady moisture, so in Southwest Florida it needs full sun, deep regular watering and plenty of room from pipes and foundations. Expect some leaf drop in winter.

Where Populus Yunna works in a SW Florida yard

Use it where height and a clean vertical line matter: flanking a driveway, framing an entry, or screening a second-story view along a side yard. Plant in a straight row for a formal look, and keep it well back from the house, septic lines, drains and pool decks, because poplar roots go looking for water.

Podocarpus or dwarf yaupon holly underneath keeps the base from looking bare.

  • Tall narrow screen
  • Formal driveway row
  • Entry accent trees
  • Vertical accent by buildings

How our crew plants it

Site it at least 15 to 20 ft from the house, pipes and septic, in a hole twice as wide as the root ball and no deeper, root flare at the soil line. Stake it for the first year.

Poplars drink, so use the extra watering Lee and Collier allow for new plantings, then taper off. Our crew sets it and cleans up.

Care after planting

  • Water deeply and regularly through the first year, especially in the March to May dry stretch, since poplars dislike drying out.
  • Feed lightly in spring and early October, and skip nitrogen and phosphorus from June 1 to September 30 under the Lee County, Naples and Marco Island ban.
  • Prune dead or crossing branches while it is young, and leave large limbs to a pro.

What to watch for

  • Poplars are typically short-lived with soft wood and thirsty roots, so plan on a fast screen rather than a lifetime shade tree.
  • Roots chase water and can invade drains and septic lines, so give it distance.

Populus Yunna questions we hear

What is Populus Yunna?+

Populus 'Yunna' is a poplar sold as a narrow, upright tree for formal rows and screens, often compared with Italian cypress. It is deciduous or semi-deciduous, so it may lose some leaves in a cooler winter. Plan on 25 ft or more of height, plus plenty of sun and water.

Does Populus Yunna grow well in Southwest Florida?+

It is sold for zones 8 to 11, so heat and cold are not the problem. The challenge is our sandy soil and dry season, since poplars want deep, steady moisture and young trees need regular watering for the first year. Give it full sun, and keep it off salty waterfront exposure.

How far from the house should I plant Populus Yunna?+

Keep it at least 15 to 20 ft from the house, pool, drains and septic. Poplar roots are shallow, wide and drawn to water, and a mature tree can reach 40 ft or more. In a row, give each tree 10 to 15 ft so the canopies do not crowd.
