Reclinata (Senegal Date) Palms, Delivered and Planted in SW Florida
Reclinata palm, or Senegal date palm, is a multi-trunk date palm that forms a big, graceful clump of arching fronds and grows well in SW Florida sun. It is spiny, needs lots of room, is prone to lethal bronzing and is on Florida's invasive plant list, so it suits only large, open yards. We deliver and plant field-grown clumps.

Where Reclinata Palm works in a SW Florida yard
A reclinata palm belongs in an open, sunny area at least 15 ft from the house, walkways and pool, as a single specimen, since the clump keeps widening and the leaf bases carry sharp spines. The curved trunks and fine arching fronds look best with room to spread, backed by lawn or low groundcover.
Keep it away from preserves and canal edges. Blue daze and society garlic make easy low plantings.
- Large-lot specimen clump
- Open, sunny lawn focal point
- Big resort-style yards
How our crew plants it
A field-grown reclinata is set at the depth it grew, with the wrapped root ball level with the soil and no soil against the trunks, then braced for several months until new roots hold it.
Our crew handles the depth, waters it in and cleans up. New palms get frequent watering for the first couple of months, as Lee and Collier allow.
Care after planting
- Feed with a controlled-release palm fertilizer, about 8-2-12 with magnesium and micronutrients, in spring and fall, and hold nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer from June 1 to September 30, the Lee County, Naples and Marco Island ban window.
- Wear thick gloves and eye protection when trimming, and cut only dead fronds, because the leaf bases are armed with spines.
- Cut fruit stalks before the dates ripen so seedlings do not sprout in beds or nearby natural areas.
- Thin extra suckers at the base to keep the clump open and tidy.
- Watch for leaning trunks, since UF/IFAS notes trunks that bend toward horizontal as the palm ages may need a brace or cable.
What to watch for
- Reclinata palm is a Category II invasive on Florida's list and UF/IFAS rates it invasive and not recommended in South Florida, so plant it only in a yard well away from preserves and canal edges, remove fruit stalks and seedlings, and consider native paurotis or sabal palm near natural land.
- Lethal bronzing, confirmed in Lee, Collier and Charlotte counties, kills Phoenix palms within months, and trunk injections every three to four months can protect healthy palms but rarely save an infected one.
- Ganoderma butt rot shows as a varnished, shelf-like conk at the base of the trunk and is fatal.
Reclinata Palm questions we hear
Is reclinata palm invasive in Florida?+
Yes. Phoenix reclinata is a Category II plant on Florida's invasive list, and UF/IFAS rates it invasive and not recommended in South Florida. Seedlings spread and the clump keeps suckering. It only suits large yards away from natural areas, with seed stalks removed.
How big does a reclinata palm get?+
UF/IFAS lists it at 25 to 35 ft tall with a clump 12 to 20 ft wide, and mature clumps can spread wider still. The trunks curve and lean as they age, and the leaf bases carry sharp spines, so give it at least 15 ft of clear room.
Does lethal bronzing affect reclinata palms?+
Yes. Reclinata is a Phoenix palm, a group lethal bronzing hits hard, and the disease is confirmed in Lee, Collier and Charlotte counties. Preventive trunk injections of oxytetracycline every three to four months can protect healthy palms, but once symptoms show it is usually too late.
