Where Slash Pine works in a SW Florida yard
Plant slash pine on a lot with real room: a back corner, a natural area or an open lawn at least 25 ft from the house, pool and power lines. It looks right with saw palmetto, sabal palm and muhly grass at its feet, which recreate a Florida pine flatwoods.
Expect pine needles, so avoid planting directly over a patio, pool or gutters.
- Native shade tree for large lots
- Natural pine flatwoods look
- Drought-tolerant evergreen
- Pine straw for mulch
How our crew plants it
We set the 45 gallon root ball with the top level with or just above grade, in a hole two to three times as wide and no deeper. We backfill with native sand, water in, mulch off the trunk, and stake or guy the tree for the first year. Lee and Collier allow extra watering on new plantings.
Care after planting
- Water a new pine regularly through its first dry season, then let it rely on rain.
- Avoid piling soil, paving or driving over the root zone, since pines are sensitive to root damage and compaction.
- Skip fertilizer on established pines, which do fine in sandy soil, and keep any feeding outside the June 1 to September 30 ban in Lee County, Naples and Marco Island.
- Rake the fallen needles into beds as pine straw mulch, and clear them from roofs, gutters and pool screens a few times a year.
What to watch for
- Bark beetles such as Ips attack pines stressed by drought, root damage or storm injury, so protect the roots and water a young tree through dry spells.
- Tall pines are among the trees most likely to snap or topple in a major hurricane, so site them well away from the house, pool, driveway and overhead lines.
Slash Pine questions we hear
Is slash pine native to Southwest Florida?+
Yes. Slash pine is a Florida native, and the South Florida variety is the pine of Lee and Collier flatwoods. It is adapted to sandy soil, summer rain and winter drought, so it needs little care once established. That is why it looks right in natural-style yards and on large lots.
How close to the house can I plant a slash pine?+
Plant it at least 25 ft from the house, pool, driveway and overhead lines. A slash pine reaches 50 to 80 ft or more, drops needles and cones, and tall pines can snap in a major hurricane. Large lots and back corners are the right spot.
How fast does a slash pine grow?+
Slash pine grows fast for a pine, and young trees can add a couple of feet a year in good conditions. Growth slows as the tree matures. A 45 gallon tree gets you a head start, but it still needs a regular watering routine through its first dry season.
