Yesterday Today and Tomorrow, Delivered and Planted in SW Florida

Yesterday today and tomorrow is a flowering shrub whose blooms open deep purple, fade to lavender, then turn white, all on the same plant. It does well in Southwest Florida in part shade, blooms most heavily in the warm months and gives off a sweet evening fragrance. It is poisonous if eaten, especially to dogs, so plant it away from pets that chew.

Where Yesterday Today and Tomorrow works in a SW Florida yard

Use it as a flowering shrub in part shade: along the east side of a house, under high oak shade or as a loose hedge behind lower plants. The three-color bloom is the draw, so plant it where you will see it.

Gardenia and ixora like the same acidic, well-drained soil, and cast iron plant fills in underneath. Keep it out of dog runs and play areas, since all parts are toxic if eaten.

  • Fragrant flowering hedge
  • Part-shade foundation shrub
  • Spring color in shade beds

How our crew plants it

Use slightly acidic, well-drained soil in a spot with morning sun and afternoon shade. Dig twice as wide as the pot and no deeper, set the root ball level and mulch 2 to 3 inches deep.

The crew sets it, waters it in and cleans up. Lee and Collier allow extra watering on new plantings; then drop to your assigned two days.

Care after planting

  • Feed in spring with an acid-forming fertilizer or one with iron and micronutrients, and skip nitrogen and phosphorus from June 1 to September 30.
  • Treat yellow leaves with green veins as an iron shortage in our alkaline soil, using a chelated iron product.
  • Prune lightly after the main spring bloom to control size, since heavy pruning later removes flower buds.
  • Water evenly, and do not let it wilt or sit in water.

What to watch for

  • All parts are poisonous if eaten, and the ASPCA lists it as toxic to dogs, cats and horses, with tremors and seizures among the signs.
  • Alkaline soil can cause yellowing from iron shortage, so feed with iron where the leaves pale.
  • Hard freezes kill the tops, so cover young plants inland.

Yesterday Today and Tomorrow questions we hear

Is yesterday today and tomorrow poisonous to dogs?+

Yes. The ASPCA lists it as toxic to dogs, cats and horses, and UF/IFAS notes all parts contain toxic alkaloids. Signs include vomiting, drooling, tremors and seizures that can last for days. If your dog chews plants, plant something else, and call a vet right away after any ingestion.

Why do the flowers change color on yesterday today and tomorrow?+

The blooms open deep purple, fade to lavender and turn white over a few days, so one plant shows all three colors at once. The color change is a normal part of the flower's life. In South Florida it flowers heavily through spring and summer, with scattered flowers at other times.

How big does yesterday today and tomorrow get in Florida?+

Expect 5 to 10 ft tall and 4 to 8 ft wide, depending on the species. It is easy to prune to 6 ft or so after the spring bloom. Give it at least 4 ft from walls so it can fill out without being cut back hard.
