Where Crepe Jasmine works in a SW Florida yard
Crepe jasmine's white pinwheel flowers are sweetly fragrant, so plant it where you will notice them: beside a patio, lanai, entry or bedroom window. At 3 to 4 ft apart it makes a loose hedge or screen, and it keeps its deepest green in filtered shade. Dwarf ixora, bromeliads and ti plant fill in around the base.
- Fragrant flowering hedges
- Entry and patio plantings
- Filtered-shade privacy screens
- Beds beside windows and doors
How our crew plants it
Plant at the same depth as the container, in a hole 2 to 3 times as wide, away from concrete and limestone edges where soil runs more alkaline. Space 3 to 4 ft for a hedge, mulch 2 inches off the stems and water in.
Extra watering on new plantings is allowed in Lee and Collier, so keep it moist while roots establish, then taper.
Care after planting
- Prune lightly after flowering flushes to keep it compact or shape a hedge, since it recovers quickly.
- Treat yellow leaves with green veins using chelated iron or a micronutrient fertilizer, because alkaline soil ties up iron.
- Feed in spring and early fall, and skip nitrogen and phosphorus from June 1 to September 30 in Lee County, Naples and Marco Island.
- Cover plants on frost nights if you are inland, and wait until spring to cut back freeze damage.
What to watch for
- Like other plants in the dogbane family it has milky sap that can irritate skin, so wear gloves when pruning.
Crepe Jasmine questions we hear
How big does crepe jasmine get?+
Usually 6 to 10 ft tall and 3 to 6 ft wide, though it prunes easily to stay smaller. Double-flowered forms exist, but a standard plant needs room to spread. A 3 gallon plant starts well under that size and fills out over a few seasons.
Does crepe jasmine bloom all year in Florida?+
Nearly. White, fragrant pinwheel flowers show up off and on through the year in SW Florida, heaviest in the warm months. Cold snaps interrupt flowering and can burn the foliage, and a bit of pruning after a flush keeps the plant full and blooming.
Can crepe jasmine take a freeze?+
Not a hard one. Leaves burn near freezing and a hard freeze kills it back, though it usually recovers from the roots. Canal and Gulf-side yards rarely see that cold; inland, cover young plants on frost nights and wait until spring to prune frozen growth.
