Wax Jasmine, Delivered and Planted in SW Florida

Where Jasmine Wax works in a SW Florida yard

Wax jasmine works two ways: twining up a trellis, arbor or fence, or clipped into a loose, mounded hedge. Plant it near a patio, bedroom window or entry where its sweet, mild fragrance can be enjoyed, and give it sun for the most flowers.

Confederate jasmine and mandevilla share the same trellis-style uses, and liriope makes a clean edge at its base.

  • Fragrant trellis vine
  • Loose flowering hedge
  • Fence and wall cover
  • Patio and entry planting

How our crew plants it

Install the trellis or wires first. Plant at the same depth as in the container, in a hole twice as wide, and backfill with native sand. Space plants 3 to 4 ft apart for a hedge. Water in and mulch off the stems. Lee and Collier let new plantings take extra water, so give it a daily soak at first.

Care after planting

  • Tie new shoots to the trellis as they grow, since it twines loosely and needs guiding.
  • Prune after the main spring bloom flush to shape the plant and keep it dense; light trims through summer are fine.
  • Two feedings, spring and early fall, with a slow-release shrub fertilizer are enough; nitrogen and phosphorus are off limits June 1 to September 30 in Lee County, Naples and Marco Island.
  • Water deeply during the dry season; established plants handle short dry spells.

What to watch for

  • Aphids, scale and whiteflies can cluster on soft new growth and leave sooty mold, so wash them off or treat early.
  • Left unpruned, it sprawls and twines through nearby shrubs, so tie it up and trim it back each year.

Jasmine Wax questions we hear

Is wax jasmine a vine or a shrub?+

Both. Wax jasmine twines like a loose vine when given a trellis, wires or a fence, and it grows as a mounded shrub 4 to 8 ft wide when left free-standing. For a hedge, plant it 3 to 4 ft apart and clip it; for a climber, train the shoots up the support.

Is wax jasmine fragrant, and when does it bloom?+

Yes, the white star-shaped flowers carry a sweet, mild fragrance, softer than the night-blooming jasmines. In Southwest Florida it blooms much of the year, with the heaviest flush in late spring and early summer. Plant it near a patio or entry so you can enjoy it.

How much sun does wax jasmine need?+

Full sun to part shade. It flowers best with at least six hours of sun and still grows in part shade with fewer blooms. It tolerates most soils and is moderately drought tolerant once established, so it suits Cape Coral's sandy yards with regular watering at first.
