Night Blooming Jasmine, Delivered and Planted in SW Florida

Night blooming jasmine is a fast-growing, fragrant shrub that does well in SW Florida sun and part shade, with small flowers that release a strong perfume after dark. It is best as a contained courtyard or fence-line plant, because the berries are poisonous and birds spread the seed. We deliver and plant 3 gallon plants, set at the right depth and watered in.

Where Night Blooming Jasmine works in a SW Florida yard

Plant night blooming jasmine where you will enjoy the scent without being overwhelmed by it: near a patio, courtyard or fence line, but not under a bedroom window, since the perfume is strong and heavy.

It grows into a loose, open shrub, so use it at the back of a bed or as an informal screen. Gardenia, crepe jasmine and confederate jasmine are good fragrant companions.

  • Evening fragrance garden
  • Courtyard and fence-line shrub
  • Informal screen

How our crew plants it

Set the plant level with the soil in a hole twice as wide as the pot and no deeper than the root ball, spacing plants 5 to 6 feet apart. We water in and mulch 2 inches deep.

Lee and Collier allow extra watering for new plantings, so water every day or two at first. Keep it away from preserves, wetlands and natural areas.

Care after planting

  • Prune after each flush of flowers to keep it compact and to remove berry clusters before birds spread the seed.
  • Water new plants regularly and established plants on your assigned days; it tolerates dry spells but blooms best with steady moisture.
  • Feed lightly in spring, and skip nitrogen and phosphorus products from June 1 to September 30 where local rules ban them.
  • Cut back frost-burned growth once the danger of cold has passed.

What to watch for

  • UF/IFAS rates night blooming jasmine a high invasion risk and does not recommend it, because birds spread the berries into natural areas, so we plant it only in contained spots, trim off the berries, and suggest gardenia or confederate jasmine for fragrance without the risk.
  • All parts of the plant, especially the white berries, are poisonous to people and pets, so don't plant it where children or dogs chew on shrubs.
  • The perfume is strong enough to bother some people, especially on still evenings, so keep it away from windows and seating you use at night.

Night Blooming Jasmine questions we hear

Is night blooming jasmine invasive in Florida?+

UF/IFAS rates it a high invasion risk and does not recommend it, because birds spread the berries into natural areas. It is not on the state's invasive plant list. If you plant it, keep it away from preserves and wetlands and trim off the berries. For fragrance without the risk, ask us about gardenia or confederate jasmine.

Is night blooming jasmine poisonous to dogs and cats?+

Yes. All parts are poisonous, especially the small white berries, and children who eat them can be harmed too. Eating the plant can cause drooling, vomiting and diarrhea, and sometimes more serious signs. Keep it out of pet and play areas, and call your vet or poison control if anything is eaten.

How big does night blooming jasmine get, and how fast?+

It is a fast grower that reaches 6 to 10 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide in SW Florida, with loose, arching branches. It needs pruning once or twice a year to stay in bounds. Flowers come in flushes through the warm months, with the strongest perfume on warm, still evenings.
