Aloe Vera, Delivered and Planted in SW Florida

Aloe vera grows easily in Southwest Florida as long as the soil drains fast and a hard freeze stays away. It is a clumping, sun-loving succulent that sends up yellow to orange flower spikes in spring and asks for very little water. We deliver it in 1 and 3 gallon pots and plant it on a slight mound, so the crown stays dry through the rainy season.

Full sun to part shade; afternoon shade helps new plants

Where Aloe Vera works in a SW Florida yard

Aloe vera belongs where the soil dries fast: a mounded bed along a sunny wall, a gravel border, or a big pot by the door. The gray-green rosettes look good with agave, bulbine and blue daze, which all share its love of sun and sharp drainage.

Space the clumps about 2 ft apart and the pups fill the gaps over a couple of seasons. Keep it out of low spots and away from sprinkler heads. Water sitting around the crown during rainy season is what kills it here.

  • Low-water sunny beds
  • Rock and gravel gardens
  • Pots by the door
  • Dry mounded borders
  • Kitchen garden corners

How our crew plants it

Make the hole as wide as the pot but no deeper than the root ball, and set the plant so the base of the rosette sits an inch above the surrounding soil. On flat lots, build a low berm of sandy soil so rain runs off.

Water it in, then let it dry out; one deep soak a week while it roots is plenty. Lee and Collier rules allow extra watering on new plantings, but aloe does not want it. Gravel around the base beats wood mulch.

Care after planting

  • From June to October let the rain do the work and keep irrigation off the bed.
  • In the dry season, a deep soak every two to three weeks is plenty for established plants.
  • Cover plants or move pots on inland frost nights, since a hard freeze turns the leaves to mush.
  • Cut spent flower stalks at the base, and dig or pot up pups when the clump gets crowded.
  • Feed lightly, if at all, with a slow-release fertilizer in spring; the Lee County, Naples and Marco Island ban on nitrogen and phosphorus runs June 1 to September 30.

What to watch for

  • Root and crown rot from wet soil is the main way people lose aloe, so drainage matters more than anything else.
  • The yellow latex under the leaf skin can upset a dog's or cat's stomach if chewed, so plant it where pets will not gnaw it.

Aloe Vera questions we hear

Can aloe vera live outside year round in Cape Coral?+

Yes. In zone 10 it stays outdoors all year and handles our summers well. A hard freeze damages the leaves, so cover plants on frost nights, mostly an inland concern in Lehigh Acres and North Fort Myers. Coastal plantings rarely need cover. Fast drainage is what keeps it alive.

How much sun does aloe vera need in Florida?+

Full sun to part shade. Plants coming from a shady nursery bench can sunburn in July and August, so give them morning sun and afternoon shade for the first few weeks. Orange or tan stress color in full summer sun is cosmetic. Mushy or see-through leaves are not.

Why is my aloe vera turning brown or mushy?+

Mushy leaves usually mean too much water or poor drainage, especially in rainy season, and a freeze can look similar. Thin, curled leaves point to thirst. Cut back watering, raise the bed, and trim rotted leaves off at the base. If the crown itself is soft, the plant may not recover.

How often should I water aloe vera planted in the ground?+

Once a week for the first month or two while roots grow, then only in long dry spells. Rainfall covers most of the year in Southwest Florida. In the dry season, a deep soak every two to three weeks is plenty for an established plant. More water just invites rot.

Is aloe vera safe around dogs and cats?+

Keep pets from chewing it. The clear gel inside the leaf is mild, but the yellow latex just under the skin can cause vomiting and diarrhea if a pet eats it. Plant it in a bed or pot that dogs do not dig in, and call a vet if a pet eats a lot.

How far apart should I plant aloe vera?+

Plant 18 to 24 inches apart. Each plant sends up pups around the base, so the clump widens in a season or two and crowding only invites rot. Gravel or sandy soil between plants keeps the crowns dry, and you can lift extra pups to start new clumps elsewhere.
