Desert Rose, a Fat-Trunked Flowering Succulent, Planted in SW Florida

Desert rose looks tropical but grows like a desert plant: a fat-trunked succulent with trumpet flowers that needs full sun, sharp drainage and protection from cold and wet feet. Most people grow it in a pot, though a warm, raised bed works. Our crew will plant it where you choose, but every part is poisonous, so pick the spot with pets and kids in mind.

Where Desert Rose works in a SW Florida yard

Treat desert rose as a feature plant. A big pot by the front door or lanai lets you roll it to shelter on a cold night and keeps the roots out of rainy-season puddles.

In the ground, give it a raised mound in full sun against a warm wall, away from sprinklers. It pairs well with agave, aloe and ponytail palm in a dry, sunny bed.

  • Patio and entry pots
  • Raised sunny beds
  • Succulent and rock gardens
  • Warm, sheltered corners

How our crew plants it

Pick a spot with six or more hours of sun, then build a sandy mound 8 to 12 inches high. Set the plant so the swollen base sits an inch or two above the mound and is never buried. Water in once, then hold off until the soil dries, even though Lee and Collier allow extra watering on new plantings.

Care after planting

  • Water only when the soil is dry a couple of inches down, and cut back almost completely from November to February.
  • Keep sprinklers off the plant; hand watering or a drip line at the base is safer.
  • Move pots under cover or wrap in-ground plants when a night near 40°F is forecast.
  • Feed lightly in spring only; nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer is off limits from June 1 through September 30.

What to watch for

  • All parts are poisonous and the milky sap can irritate skin and eyes, so wear gloves and keep pets and kids from chewing it.
  • Oleander caterpillars and scale can strip leaves or stunt growth, so check often and hand-pick caterpillars.
  • Root and caudex rot from wet soil is the most common way people lose them, so drainage is everything.

Desert Rose questions we hear

Can desert rose grow in the ground in Cape Coral?+

Yes, in a raised mound in full sun with fast drainage, away from sprinklers and low spots. Soggy rainy-season soil is the main risk, and many people keep it in a pot for that reason. In-ground plants also need cover on cold nights.

How cold can a desert rose take in Florida?+

It is tender. Leaves can drop in the 50s, branch tips are damaged near 40°F, and a freeze can kill it. Cold nights are rarer on the coast than inland, but plan to cover or move it whenever the forecast gets close.

Is desert rose poisonous to dogs and cats?+

Yes. All parts are toxic, and the milky sap irritates skin and eyes. If a pet chews on it, call a vet right away. Plant it in a pot or raised bed that pets cannot reach, and wear gloves whenever you handle or prune it.
