Where Carpentaria Palm works in a SW Florida yard
Carpentaria is a clean, upright palm that gives height with a modest crown, so it fits entries, drive edges and corner beds. Plant three at staggered heights for a full tropical look, and keep each at least 10 feet from the house and pool cage.
The crownshaft drops old fronds on its own, which keeps it tidy. Bromeliads, ti plant and ginger make easy underplanting.
- Slender specimen palm
- Entry and driveway accents
- Groups of three
- Tropical backdrop
How our crew plants it
Set the palm at the height it grew, level with the soil and never buried. We dig the hole twice as wide as the root ball, backfill with native soil and water in well. Tall palms are braced for the first several months. Lee and Collier allow extra watering for new plantings, so water every day or two at first.
Care after planting
- Feed with an 8-2-12 palm fertilizer with micronutrients in spring and early fall, skipping nitrogen and phosphorus products from June 1 to September 30 where local rules ban them.
- Keep the soil evenly moist through the dry season, since carpentaria is not a palm to let dry out.
- Cut heavy fruit stalks while they are still green if the red fruit drop bothers you near a patio or pool.
- Cover young palms with frost cloth on frost nights, and keep mulch 2 to 3 inches deep and off the trunk.
What to watch for
- Lethal bronzing, a spreading palm disease, has been confirmed in carpentaria palms in Florida, so watch for early fruit drop, blackened flower stalks and browning fronds, and call us or a certified arborist quickly because there is usually no cure once it shows.
- It sets heavy crops of small red fruit that drop and sprout under the palm, so plan on cleanup near patios and pool decks.
Carpentaria Palm questions we hear
How fast does a carpentaria palm grow?+
Fast. In SW Florida a carpentaria with sun, water and regular feeding can add a foot or two of height a year once established. It reaches 25 to 35 feet over time, so allow room above and around it. Slow, yellowing growth usually means it needs micronutrients or more water.
Is carpentaria palm cold hardy in Florida?+
It is frost tender. Fronds burn near freezing, and young palms can be hurt badly by a hard freeze. Coastal Lee and Collier usually do fine, while inland yards should plant in a warm, sheltered spot and cover small palms on frost nights.
How close to the house can I plant a carpentaria palm?+
At least 10 feet. The crown spreads 8 to 12 feet, the fronds are long, and the fruit stalks drop heavy crops. Keep it clear of pool cages, power lines and roof edges. In a group of three, space the trunks 6 to 10 feet apart.
