Where Foxtail Palm works in a SW Florida yard

Foxtail palms read as clean and tropical without looking busy. Use a single as a lawn accent, plant a double or triple at the corner of the house for fuller form, or line singles 10 to 15 ft apart along a driveway or front walk. The smooth trunk and tidy crown pair well with underplantings of bromeliads, dwarf ixora or coontie.

Keep them off the pool deck, since the red-orange fruit drops and can stain pavers, and give the crown about 10 ft of clear width.

  • Entry and driveway accent
  • Specimen palm for lawns
  • Rows along a drive or wall
  • Instant height with field-grown

How our crew plants it

Foxtails go in at the same depth they were growing, with the top of the root ball at or just above grade and no soil piled against the trunk. We dig the hole about twice as wide as the ball, backfill with native sand, and water it in thoroughly.

Field-grown singles, doubles and triples should be braced for the first 6 to 12 months while new roots anchor them. Under Lee and Collier rules, new plantings can be watered extra for the first weeks, then moved to your assigned days.

Care after planting

  • Feed three times a year with an 8-2-12 palm fertilizer that includes micronutrients, timed for late winter, late May and October to stay outside the June 1 to September 30 fertilizer ban in Lee County, Naples and Marco Island.
  • Watch older fronds for yellow-orange flecking or yellow banding, the first signs of potassium or magnesium deficiency, and for frizzled new fronds, which point to manganese.
  • Water new palms deeply every few days for the first couple of months, then taper to your assigned two days.
  • Let the palm shed its own fronds, since it is self-cleaning and cutting green fronds only weakens it.
  • Cover young palms with frost cloth on nights forecast to reach freezing, especially inland.

What to watch for

  • Foxtails are heavy feeders, and potassium, magnesium and manganese deficiencies show up fast on a hungry palm, so keep up the palm fertilizer with micronutrients.
  • A hard freeze can kill the growing point and no fertilizer fixes that, so inland plantings in Lehigh Acres, North Fort Myers and Port Charlotte need frost protection on cold nights.
  • Newly planted palms are the ones that lean or fall in strong wind, which is why bracing through the first year matters.

Foxtail Palm questions we hear

How fast do foxtail palms grow in Southwest Florida?+

Foxtails are fast for a palm, often adding 1 to 3 ft of height a year in warm weather when they are well fed and watered. Growth slows in winter and on starved palms. Regular palm fertilizer with micronutrients is the biggest lever you control.

Do foxtail palms survive freezes in Cape Coral or Lehigh Acres?+

Foxtails are cold-sensitive. Fronds burn around 30 to 32°F, and a hard freeze can kill the palm. Cape Coral and coastal Lee usually stay warm enough. Lehigh Acres and North Fort Myers can see frost, so cover young palms those nights. If the center spear stays green and firm, the palm often recovers.

How far apart should foxtail palms be planted?+

Space foxtails 10 to 15 ft apart in a row so the crowns do not crowd. For a loose clustered look, groups can sit 6 to 8 ft apart. Keep a single about 8 to 10 ft from the house and clear of the pool deck, since the crown spreads 10 ft or more.

Should I choose a single, double or triple foxtail palm?+

A single is the classic clean line, best for rows and tight spots. A double or triple has two or three trunks in one hole, which gives a fuller crown and more presence at an entry or corner. They need more room, since the crowns overlap and spread wider than a single.

What fertilizer does a foxtail palm need?+

Use an 8-2-12 palm fertilizer with micronutrients, three times a year. Foxtails are heavy feeders, and potassium, magnesium and manganese deficiency show quickly as yellow-orange flecks, yellow bands or frizzled new fronds. In Lee County, Naples and Marco Island, skip nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer from June 1 to September 30.

How much does it cost to have a foxtail palm planted?+

Size, the single, double or triple choice and the number of palms set the price, and access to the planting spot matters for big field-grown palms. Text us what you are after and we reply with a planted price, usually within the hour during the day. Half down holds the palms and a delivery day.
