Carpoxylon Palm, a Rare Specimen, Delivered and Planted
Rare, tall and tropical, Carpoxylon is a single-trunk feather palm from Vanuatu that can grow in coastal Southwest Florida, but it is cold sensitive, so it belongs in a sunny, sheltered spot. It has a green crownshaft and long arching fronds. We supply it as a specimen and plant it for you.

Where Carpoxylon Palm works in a SW Florida yard
Carpoxylon is a collector's palm for a place where you can protect it: a sunny courtyard, the warm side of the house, or inside a windbreak of other palms. Its slender trunk, glossy green crownshaft and long arching fronds look best with room around them.
Underplant with shade-tolerant tropicals such as ti plant, bromeliads and ferns, and keep it out of cold, exposed corners.
- Collector specimen palms
- Sheltered courtyard focal points
- Tropical garden accents
- Protected coastal yards
How our crew plants it
Pick a sunny, sheltered spot with well-drained soil that holds some moisture. Dig about twice the root ball's width, set the ball level with the soil, and backfill with native soil.
Brace the trunk with padded stakes for the first several months. Water in deeply and keep this palm evenly moist; extra watering on new plantings is allowed in Lee and Collier.
Care after planting
- Feed in spring and fall with a palm fertilizer such as 8-2-12 with magnesium and micronutrients, since palms in sandy soil run short of potassium, magnesium and manganese.
- Under the summer ban (June 1 to September 30), use only micronutrients, with no nitrogen or phosphorus.
- Keep the soil evenly moist, since this palm does not like to dry out.
- On cold nights, cover young palms and wrap the crown, because it does not tolerate frost and may mark in the 40s.
- Remove only fully brown fronds, using a clean saw.
What to watch for
- It is rare and cold tender, with little long-term track record in Southwest Florida, so treat it as a collector plant and protect it from frost.
- Ganoderma butt rot, which has no cure, is a risk for many palms, so avoid trunk wounds and keep mowers away from the base.
Carpoxylon Palm questions we hear
What is a Carpoxylon palm?+
Carpoxylon macrospermum is a single-trunk feather palm from the lowland rainforests of Vanuatu, with a green crownshaft and long arching fronds. It is critically endangered in the wild, and in Florida it is a collector palm.
Can a Carpoxylon palm handle Southwest Florida cold?+
Not well. It is a tropical palm best suited to the warmest parts of South Florida. Fronds can mark on cool nights and a frost can kill it, so plant it in a sheltered spot on the coast, cover it on cold nights, and be cautious inland in Lehigh Acres or North Fort Myers.
How big does a Carpoxylon palm get?+
In its native Vanuatu it can pass 60 ft, with fronds 10 to 13 ft long. Long-term size in Florida is not well documented because the palm is uncommon here. Plan for a tall palm and keep it at least 15 ft from the house, pool and power lines.
